A Reflection for Holy Week:

A cradle and a cross

And between these - a life

Bethlehem and Jerusalem

A birth and a death

One of "sorrows"

Who often wept

One of joy who also kept

Sensitivity and compassion

Alive and real.

This week, let us feel

The surge of that life

The beauty of that love

The power of that cross.

Excerpt from "Touch Holiness" Ruth Duck

Greetings!

Imagine, here we are just a few days away from the beginning of Holy Week, the most revered and spiritually deepening week for Christians all over the world. I encourage you to discipline yourself to attend the Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Services. Thanks to Martin James, Janet Jones and the Celebration Choir for leading worship on March 9. This Sunday at Westminster we will re-enact the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem with a live donkey and children leading the way! We will celebrate Holy Communion, remembering the last supper that Jesus had with his disciples before he was betrayed and crucified. On Sunday we will receive new members by baptism, confirmation and transfer of membership. The Lenten Study will be held on Wednesday morning and evening and please note that the Prayer Shawl group moves to Tuesday March 18th at 7:00 p.m. March 23, Easter Sunday the Celebration Choir will present an Easter Cantata which will be a musical treat, complete with our traditional live daffodil cross!

"Lift High the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim,

'Til the entire world adores His sacred name!"

See you in church,

Rev. Sandra

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD:

Notice to the Congregation

As you may well know, the congregation of Westminster United Church invested considerable time and effort over the past 2 years in the WOW (Wide Open Windows) project. All of this was done to help us find out where we were and where we wanted to go as a congregation. There was a lot of great input received. Now we need to take all that input and develop a plan for the future growth and development of this congregation.

At its inaugural meeting in February, the Board of WUC decided to take the final step in this process and to develop a Vision, Mission Statement and Strategic Plan that is consistent with the input received in the WOW process and the goals written by each Action Group The existing Vision and Mission Statements are over 10 years old and need to be updated to reflect the evolving reality of Westminster and its role in our community.

The Board has agreed to use the services of an outside, neutral facilitator to help us move through this process. We have done so in order that each of us on the Board, as members of this congregation, would have a voice in the process. One cannot facilitate and participate at the same time and we didn't want to neutralize anyone's voice.

We have decided to use one hour of each monthly Board meeting to work with the facilitator and move towards developing a Vision, Mission Statement and Strategic Plan for this congregation. Our Board meetings are open to all members of the congregation and everyone is welcome to attend. Our first session with the facilitator will be on Monday, March 17th at 7:00 p.m.

No final decisions will be made without confirming them with the congregation. I will keep you updated on our progress through similar notices. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Bob Borden,

Board Chair

Some interesting Easter trivia:

Easter this year is: Sunday March 23, 2008.
As you may know, Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.
Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) but that is pretty rare. This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier! Here's the facts:
  • The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now).
  • The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you're 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that!).
  • The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now).
  • The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

Mesa

by Doug Curtis

Paul, an out of work writer, agrees to drive his wife's grandfather, Bud, to his retirement trailer in Mesa, Arizona, thinking the adventure and inspiration of the road trip will lift him from the slump he has found himself in. The problem is 93 year old Bud is intent on arriving for his last year at the trailer the same way he always has; stopping at his favorite Denny's and Motel 6's along the way, and with no interest in indulging in Paul's romantic notions. Through their friction and while watching Bud and his friends in the twilight of life, Paul's own life is altered in this poignant comedy.

WESTMINSTER'S BOOK CLUB
The group has chosen two books for reading this time around and welcomes any newcomers to the group.
Easter Everywhere: A Memoir by Darcey Steinke - Darcey Steinke was a minister's daughter and a dutiful Christian. But after her mother's breakdown and her father's struggles she turned to the club scene. Marriage, motherhood and divorce led her to begin the slow process of moving toward a living faith.  (This book will be discussed June 22nd at 12:15 p.m. after church)
Water into Wine - An Empowering Vision of the Gospels by Tom Harpur - Harpur sets out the powerful and transforming message that emerges when the gospels are read as they were originally intended to be and as they were understood by the first Christians, such as Clement of Alexandria and Origen. Seen in their true mythological and symbolical meaning, the stories in the drama of Jesus' life come alive in a totally fresh way.  (This book will be discussed in two sessions. The first half of the book will be discussed April 27th at 12:15 p.m. and the second half will be discussed May 25th at 12:15 p.m.)
If you wish to borrow a copy of either book, please contact Janet at janet-jones@sympatico.ca or by phone at (519) 940-3286. Feel free to bring your lunch along! If you wish to be kept informed of our meetings and book selections, please contact Janet so you can be added to the Book Club's communication circle.

Going Green!

Who: YOU! Everyone around the world

What: http://www.earthhour.org/

When: March 29, 2008, 8pm your local time

Where: In your own home and/or workplace

Why: To create AWARENESS about energy consumption

PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION BELOW BEFORE ASKING WHERE THIS EVENT IS TAKING PLACE.

This happens in your home or your workplace at 8pm (your local time) on March 29th WHEREVER YOU ARE IN THE WORLD by simply turning off your lights, your TV, your dishwasher, your heating or a/c. You don't have to be in Toronto (they won't let me not put something in that spot) or a major city to participate.

On March 29th, 2008 at 8pm local time Earth Hour will commence ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a POWERFUL MESSAGE about the need for action on global warming.

Be part of making Earth Hour 2008 a huge, global success by telling your friends and family. Remember, every single light makes a statement and makes a difference.

Last year, on 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney (Australia) businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. This massive collective effort reduced Sydney's energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.

Pledge your support for Earth Hour and find out more about the lights-out campaign at earthhour.org, the official website.

Solutions from last week's trivia:

Someone showed me this story and remarked that there are twenty books of the Bible hidden here. He challenged me to find them. Sure enough they're all here. Still this thing's a lulu, kept me looking so hard for the longest time. Some of you will get bogged down with acts, others are hit by them like they were some kind of revelation or something. You may get in a jam especially since the names are not capitalized and often leap the spaces between the words. This makes it a real job to find them but it'll provide a most fascinating few minutes for you. Yes there are some really easy ones to spot, but don't get the big head cause truthfully you'll soon figure that it would take most federal judges and preachers numbers of hours to find them all. I will admit that it usually takes a minister to find one of them and that is not uncommon for there are to be loud lamentations when it is pointed out. One lady says that when she is confronted with puzzles like this she brews a cup of tea to help her concentrate better but then this lady's a real pro! Verbs, nouns and all that stuff are her thing. See how well you can compete. Relax, there really are twenty names of Bible books in this story, If you fail to find them there's a penalty. You'll have to go fly a kite, sit on a banana, hum the battle hymn of the republic, or hose a dog (a mean one). Go get it!

1 Peter 1:8  -- Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy...
