A MESSAGE FROM REV. SANDRA

Dear Family and Friends of Westminster United Church

A church newsletter whether printed or electronically transmitted is a wonderful tool for communication. Over the years the biblical story has been preserved because of many methods of communication: oral tradition and print being two of the major vehicles.

Since the advent of the computer, the Christian faith has embraced this medium to further the communication of the Christian message. Here at Westminster we have had and continue to have volunteers who work diligently at keeping in touch with our congregation and its friends. Through bulletin announcements, press releases, "Keeping in Touch" trifolds, the original printed newsletter "The Spire" and the more recent e-letter "Inspiration", many have worked tirelessly to improve communication within our community of faith. For all of those who have helped in ways both big and small I say "thank-you".  Over the next few months the Communications Action Group will be continuing to work at the enhancement of our e-newsletter and the overall communication issues in our church. Think of the Christmas story... without the angels telling Mary and Joseph not to be afraid to bear Jesus or without the angels appearing to the shepherds  on the hillside the night of Jesus' birth there would have been no desire "to go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord had revealed".

In order for a faith to stay alive and our church to grow we need to use the tools of the day and the value of oral tradition to spread the message of hope, peace, joy and love to the world and to share with You the many opportunities for spiritual and social development.  Share the news of events and activities that Westminster United Church offers to the community of Orangeville!

Please join us for worship this Sunday.

Rev. Sandra McLauchlan-Abuja

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
December 9, 2007 directly after the worship service in the sanctuary.
Dufferin-Peel Presbytery will be conducting this meeting to appoint and approve a Joint Search Committee (JSC) from the members of our congregation.  The formation of a Joint Search Committee (JSC) follows the completion of our JNAC report (available at http://www.westminsterorangeville.ca/serv01.htm or church office) and is the next step in our process to call a new Minister to Westminster.

POINSETTIAS IN MEMORIAM

In December, the U.C.W. will be organizing volunteers to visit seniors and shut-ins in our community, delivering greetings and flowers. Memorial names will be printed in the bulletin on Sunday, December 23, 2007. Names can be submitted to the church office during the week or placed on the offering plate on Sunday morning.   COST: $15:00 each. Envelopes are provided at the back of the Sanctuary or in office.  Deadline for submission is Sunday, December 16th
Poinsettias Volunteers Needed:  We require people to deliver poinsettias to the shut-ins on December 23rd after the worship service.  If you are able to help us out, please contact:  Deborah Brook 941-0712 or Dorothy Donnelly 941-3639.

UNITED CHURCH WOMEN
Christmas UCW Pot Luck Luncheon is Wednesday, December 12th at 12 p.m. There will be Special Entertainment.  Please bring mittens or hats for the Christmas Tree to be given to people in need.

FUNDSCRIP - SHOPPING AND GROWING

Every time you purchase groceries, fill up at the gas station, or shop for just about anything, you can raise funds for Westminster!  But how?  By purchasing gift cards through FUNSCRIP.  If you buy $100 in Chapters, you get $100 in Chapters.  The church also receives funds.  It's easy to use!  There are many businesses to purchase gift cards from!

For more information contact Tanya (tanya.ellacott@sympatico.ca), Karen (kfarace@rogers.com) or Janet (janet-jones@sympatico.ca)

TAKE ACTION!

Do you want to be a part of the exciting action that is taking place here at Westminster? We are looking for church members to sit on our Action Groups for 2008.  These Action Groups are responsible for the various activities within the church such as Property (maintaining the building) or Worship and Sacrament (guiding worship services) just to name a few.  If you are interested, contact Brian Heimbecker at 519-941-6225 or at lb.ironwood@sympatico.ca.   For further information about our Action Groups visit us at www.westminsterorangeville.ca.

NEW YEAR'S CELEBRATION - 5TH SUNDAY POTLUCK
Everyone is invited to join us after worship on December 30th for our next 5th Sunday Potluck - bring your party hat and your favourite dish. Hope to see you there!

PORCHLIGHT - CHANGE WITHIN REACH

The congregation is invited to pick up a light bulb after the worship service at the back of Sanctuary.   A CFL bulb uses up to 75% less energy than old-fashioned bulbs.  Save up to $50 in energy costs!  Every bulb changed means less coal has to be burned to produce power.  That means cleaner air, less childhood asthma, and lower health care costs.  For more information contact 866-585-6359 or info@onechange.org

CONSIDER NAMING WESTMINSTER AS YOUR CHRISTMAS CHARITY FOR DONATIONS
For many years our extended families have been drawing names to buy Christmas gifts.  For the past few years, we have specified a charitable donation be made in our name instead of a gift.  This year, our family will be naming Westminster United Church as our charity when we draw names. If you are used to a similar tradition in your family, consider naming Westminster as your charity of choice for this Holiday Season.  Donations can be made by family members quickly, easily and securely over the Internet through CanadaHelps.org by going to www.westminsterorangeville.ca  and then clicking on 'Donate' or by calling Lynne in the church office at 519-941-0381.

CALLING ALL INSTRUMENTAL MUSICIANS
Are you interested in creating beautiful Christmas Music for our church members?  The commitment is short, just a few weeks. Anyone with a flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, sax or drum and is interested in playing before a service, call Laurie Heimbecker at 519-941-6225. Music will be handed out shortly and practice will commence soon. We already have ten interested members. Westminster Church is such an amazing place for concert band instruments to perform in!

WESTMINSTER'S 2008 PHOTO DIRECTORY
