Shelly McManus, 41, Summit, NJ TIME REQUIRED TO REACH GOAL: 2 years & still going LESSON LEARNED: Believe in your body and mind and both will change.
BAR! Are there enough positive words for me to say? Probably not, but here's my story...
I started The Bar Method approximately 2 years ago, shortly after Jen & Angie opened. I was reluctant to try this "method," although I had heard GREAT things about it. I grew up as a competitive swimmer my entire life and I turned into a runner after the birth of my son, Luke (6). I just didn't know how this "girly" exercise was going to measure up to the hours of pounding I had grown accustomed to putting my body through. Was I EVER wrong! I knew after my first class I was hooked!
I started with 2 classes per week, then 3, then 4... I just couldn't stop myself. Not only did the exercise invigorate me, the results were AMAZING! Within 3 months, I had lost close to 15 lbs! More importantly, inches - my legs were no longer "bulky" and "thick", they were "long" & "lean" - just like the BAR said they would be! My hips were disappearing. My butt had "the dent". My stomach had become "abs."
It was around that time that Jen & Angie asked me if I would consider teaching. I was SO flattered! The year and a half of my life prior to that had been quite a roller coaster ride. Not only was my body now recovering from all of those runs, I was also recovering both physically & mentally from several miscarriages and failed attempts to have a second child. THIS was the answer! I accepted Jen & Angie's offer. I dove deeper into The Bar and what an AMAZING ride it has been! Training to become a Bar teacher not only taught me the method behind each exercise, it made me feel good about myself again. The beauty of this method is that it gives you the best body YOUR body AND mind can be. It challenges you each day to BE more. Taking The Bar Method has been such a huge gift to me. Knowing that I might pass that on to others through teaching has made it all the sweeter.
Speaking of sweets, Did I mention that I gained 70 lbs. while pregnant? YIKES!!! Oh, I am also a Type 1 Diabetic. So, diet, in combination with The Bar needed to become priority. To the inspiration of Kate Clow and others, I have become a member of the "5 Small Meals a Day Plan." It is working great for me (especially ideal with Diabetes), and has pushed me over the hump. Eating clean (and often), and BAR... A winning combination!
I see this on-going journey as a lifetime commitment. One that The Bar Method will ALWAYS be a part of!!!
Thank You, Jen & Angie! Happy Anniversary!
