THRIVE! A Cancer Survivor Says "Why Wait?"

IN THIS ISSUE:
I've Been Bitten by the Dragon; What's Next For My Life? for Cancer Survivors; Saving Women's Lives in Zambia; Ask the Survivor Coach
Greetings!
It happened on a sparkling, sunlit day on Key Biscayne. Paddling like a maniac, covered in salt water and sweat, muscling screaming in protest, I was bitten by the dragon.

DragonBoatAfter a mere half hour of paddling with the world class Save Our Sisters Dragon Boat Racing Team in Miami, I realized that while my seemingly healthy body might never be the same, my spirit had burst open and was sparkling like the waves dancing around me.

Did I mention that the forty women paddling the two boats are breast cancer survivors? And that in less than three years they've gone from a "little team of cancer women" to world class competitors who regularly "kick the butts" of co-ed teams?

I'll admit that I had no idea what dragon boat racing was about when I showed up at the Miami Boat Club. I was drawn by the passion and romance the name conjured up for me. So when realized the scope of what was going to happen, my respect and admiration for these women took a big step up. Picture forty women, in pairs side by side, led a steersperson and drummer, paddling in perfect synchronization. They are flying through the water in a 500 lb 40' x 4' Hong Kong dragon boat that can flip over if one person shifts their weight too far. I was fortunate enough to be a guest in that boat last month. Wow!

These women aren't waiting to pursue their passion for life, they're doing it now.

As I put on my life jacket and grabbed a paddle, my gut churning with apprehension and fear of failing, I asked myself why on earth I was doing this. And I realized that I was doing it because it made me happy to be the company of these women. It was a way of stepping up into two challenges I've set for myself this year - to live my life in bigger way and to do it now.

As my spirit was soaring around the sparkling water I thought of the hundreds of survivors that I know who, like the Save Our Sisters team and I, have faced death and were inspired to change because of it. Small or large, we've chosen the dreams and concerns that get our time and energy. We don't have time to wait for life to give us what we want or to make the world a better place. So we go after it and create wonderful things that serve us, our loved ones, our community and the world, like the Save Our Sisters team is doing.

As I write this article, the Save Our Sisters team is racing at the international finals in Tampa. I don't need to know where they stand in rank, because they're already the biggest winners to me.

Their dragon bit me and I'm living a bigger, more joyful life because of it.

Do you dream of something bigger in your life? Why are you waiting?
"I've learned that it is the undying hope of something that makes the dream possible. And it is the dream of that something that eventually leads to its reality."
- Vickie Girard Rand, cancer survivor & author

Ask the
Survivor Coach..
.
Q: I was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago and my treatment ended a few months ago. Some of my friends aren't returning my phone calls and I feel betrayed. Why are they avoiding me?

A: It's not unusual at all to have some of your friends withdraw during and/or after cancer. It's important to remember that it has nothing to do with you on a personal level. Most often, these people don't know what to say and are afraid of saying the wrong thing. Sometimes, facing the fact that you had cancer makes them realize that if it could happen to you it could happen to them too, and they can't face that. And truly, some of them may just be very busy and haven't howmuch you need them right now.

The least likely reason is that you somehow did something to cause this. Please don't allow yourself to think that. And if you did do something you regret give yourself a break. You've been fighting for your life and had more important things on your mind.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR MY LIFE? true story...
SURVIVING CANCER AND SAVING LIVES IN AFRICA!

I was born in Zambia where most women have never had a mammogram in their life-time. It is still common among African women to believe that Breast Cancer is caused by witchcraft and the lack of education prevents them from seeking medical care.

DoreenMy name is Doreen Mwenya-Grant and I am a Breast Cancer Survivor. My diagnosis with Breast Cancer 3 years ago was the biggest challenge I've ever had to face in my life. The diagnosis felt like a death-sentence and I couldn't figure out how anyone could live a meaningful life after experiencing a disease like cancer. While I healed well and fast physically, the psychological repercussions of my experience were far from over.

After two years, I was afraid to talk about having cancer. My doctor suggested I go to a workshop called  What's Next For My Life?™. I was afraid to go, but I gathered my courage and arrived after the workshop had started. I'm so glad I did.

Since that day in the fall of 2008, I've found purpose using my own beliefs and values. I believe that my life can be anything but ordinary. I left the workshop with the sense that I could use my challenges to help others. I gained the courage to talk about my own survival story without the fear of being judged and ridiculed.

Most importantly, I've started a Foundation, Pink Ribbon Zambia, to help and support women facing breast cancer in the most under-served communities of Africa.

The problems of Africa are so much bigger than anyone can imagine, but I was inspired enough by what I learned at workshop to forge my way forward and become an empowered Breast Cancer Advocate for the women of Africa.

Apart from being a wife and Mom, I am the Vice President of Pyramid Engineering & Construction and I'm also pursuing a degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design. I love being Mom and my 4 wonderful children are the "Angels" in my life. And I'm so happy to be alive.
