President's Corner
Legislative Day
There are a variety of issues being considered in the legislature that affect your profitability and ability to compete for business, like EFCA and Prevailing Wage.
This March 19th will be an important opportunity for you to meet with legislators and explain to them how these issues affect you and your employees.
This is also and opportunity to hear from state regulatory agencies like CCB and Building Codes Division on issues that are important to you and your business.
Remember, this is the most important legislative session in a very long time. More tax proposals, more regulations, more labor agenda could be passed this year then in the last 20 together. Whether you are aware or not, you need to be there.

SAFETY TIP

Protection Against Nail Gun Injuries
Pneumatic nail guns can be as dangerous as firearms. Even the simple act of pointing the gun toward your body while framing a building can result in a severe injury, loss of fingers, or death.
A recent increase in Oregon pneumatic nail gun incidents has prompted OSHA to issue safety procedures to help prevent these needless accidents. Protect your employees by teaching them the following OSHA nail gun safety tips:
· Review your owner's manual carefully with all nail gun operators. Demonstrate safe operating procedures for them; then watch as each employee takes a turn using the tool. · Always wear safety goggles. · Do not hold the trigger down unless you are purposefully firing the tool. This is especially important when descending ladders. · Keep people out of the range of fire. An air tool should never be fired if another worker is directly in front of the tool, or close by on either side. · Never point the tool at anyone. Treat the tool like a firearm. Never assume the tool is empty. · Disconnect the air hose before clearing a jam or making adjustments. · Do not fire the tool unless the nose is firmly pressed against a work piece. · Use only compressed air to power the tool, not bottled gas. Use the correct air pressure for the tool, and never exceed 120 psi. · Keep your free hand safely out of the way of the tool. · Do not operate the tool around flammables. · Nail top to bottom when nailing wall sheathing in a vertical position. · Nail from the eaves to the ridge when nailing roof sheathing. This will prevent you from backing off the edge of the roof. · Move forward, not backward, when nailing horizontal areas. · Secure the hose when working on scaffolding. If you set the tool down, a secured hose will prevent the weight of the hose from dragging the tool off the scaffold.
