The National Weight Control Registry states that people who keep food journals are more likely to lose weight and keep it off.

Here's an exercise which is highly effective in assisting people to lose weight much more easily:

For 3 days write down everything you eat.  Not only what you eat, but how you feel when you eat.  Write down how you feel just before you eat, and after you eat.

Awareness is the first step to creating any kind of change.

Keeping a journal encourages you to become aware of your actions, and of the emotions which initiate - and result in  - your behavior.
