Sedona contrails

"It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.  But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.  There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power."

Greetings!
Susan Nelson Photo

A couple of you noticed that my December newsletter was sent out on January 3. And now, here it is February 4, and I am sending the January newsletter.  So I am calling this newsletter January - February 2008.  Voila!  I am right on schedule!

The photos were taken in Sedona, Arizona.  I was fortunate to be there on the last day of 2007 and the first day of 2008.  What a beautiful, special place!  What a way to start this fantastic year!

To your fantastic 2008,

Susan

The Science of Personal Transformation

One of my favorite sayings is "Your perception is your reality."  Recently I was reminded of that when I was given nitrous oxide during some major dental work.

I was much more interested in the way my tongue felt against the crater formed on my cracked tooth, than I was concerned that I had the Grand Canyon in my tooth.  I calmly pondered why no one has yet designed a quiet dental drill, completely unconcerned that the drill sounded like a buzz saw and drill hammer going on simultaneously in my mouth.

I don't know precisely how nitrous oxide affects the brain, but I do know that there is scientific evidence that you can change the wiring in your own brain. You can unlearn old behaviors and beliefs.  Existing neural networks in the brain can be disengaged.

Furthermore - you create new synaptic connections between the neurons in the brain when you learn something or have a new experience.  In order to "hardwire" these synaptic connections, you must repeat a thought, action or skill over and over again.  Soon it becomes easy, automatic, second nature.  Repetition is a key component to personal transformation.

The recipe to transform your life:  Learn something, take new actions, repeat.  The idea is to get from thinking - to doing - to being.  Once you are "being", no effort is involved.  You just ARE.

Another key component of personal transformation is the power of rehearsal.  If you practice a skill in your mind in addition to physically practicing that activity, you will master the skill faster and will see greater results.

Try this:  Drummers call it paradiddle.  "Drum" on a table or on your lap like this:

Right left right right

Left right left left

Right left right right

Left right left left, and so on.

At a certain point, you will "flub" it.  Now do the exercise in your mind. Your mental rehearsal is just as effective in learning and mastering paradiddle as when you are physically rehearsing it.  Mental rehearsal literally builds and strengthens neural pathways in your brain.

Imagine how you might improve your performance - and your outcomes - if you were to mentally rehearse your upcoming presentation at work, your tennis stroke, or the new tune you are learning!

You can create a greatest version of yourself.  You can literally change your mind.

Your perception is indeed your reality.  What you believe is what you receive and achieve.  Do you believe that you can transform your life?
