It's time to fess up. The staff and I had taken some time off this past month in an attempt to recharge our batteries and reintroduce ourselves to our families after a long and fun filled 2009 sailing season.
Now we're busy with Winter projects that will get us ready for the up coming warm lake winds and warm club members' smiles. Here's a short list of our "winter to do's".
- Add a new roller furling and new headsail to our Capri 22 George Dog with an adjustable backstay.
- Pull all outboard engines and complete our annual preventative maintenance (tune up, upper and lower oil change, etc.)
- Plan and implement a creative list of club activities for 2010 (see Clinics & Events article). Lots and lots to join in on.
- Complete exterior finishes to our dock club house ( bamboo! ).
- Clean/remove the winter crud from the fleet.
- Purchase and install a margarita machine !! (just kidding).
The boats will be ready, the staff will be smiling and the winds will be blowing. Hope to see you all real soon.
P.S. THE LAKE IS "SO OVER FULL" !!!! |

Too Cold to Sail? |
|
Dear Capt. Noah T'all,
I have wanted to go sailing lately but my wife has been telling me that it is too cold. Is there such a thing as it being too cold to sail?
Jack Frost
Jack,
I am guessing that when the water in the lake freezes solid that it might be too cold to sail. But I bet that if that happens, there is a northern transplant somewhere nearby who has had his old ice-boat in his garage just waiting for the day when he can head off across the ice of the lake.
The short answer is that it is never too cold to go sailing. You do need to prepare for the cold, so here are a few tips to make your winter sailing safer and more comfortable.
1. Dress Right - Three layers, the first layer should be to move the moisture away from your body. The second layer is thermal layer and keeps you warm. The third layer blocks wind and water.
2. Wear your PFD - Nobody can swim too well with all of that cold weather junk on. Plus, if you do fall in the PFD will keep you afloat and you can focus your attention on heat retention.
3. As always alcohol, water and cold are a bad combination. Alcohol speeds hypothermia.
4. Make sure you carry snacks and fluids. You need the fuel to help keep you warm.
5. Watch out for signs of hypothermia in your crew.
- Confusion or sleepiness.
- Slowed, slurred speech, or shallow breathing
- Weak pulse
- Excess shivering or no shivering at all: stiffness in the arms or legs.
- Poor control over body movements or slow reactions.
To treat hypothermia
- Stop the exposure - Move victim to warm, dry shelter, such as the cabin of the sailboat.
- Remove wet clothing - Leave dry clothing on victim.
- Wrap the victim with blankets.
- No drinks if victim is unresponsive.
- If victim can sit up and follow commands, you may give a warm drink. No Alcohol.
6. Finally, look out for ice bergs and have a great time.
That's the fact Jack. For next time - We all know that speed in the old days was measured by knots tied in a line that was trailed over the stern. How would you do it today if your knot meter broke on you?
Safe Sailing,
Capt. Noah T'all |
| What can you do with a nice piece of line? |
|
What an easy way to learn knot tying and impress your friends at the dock. The website Animated Knots has great interactive displays for tying a Bowline, Sheet Bend, Clove Hitch and more.
Impress your friends or special someone with a rolling hitch, bowline on a bight or trucker's hitch. You'll be the talk of the group. With a good piece of line and your imagination, there are no limits thanks to this website:
Thanks to Marla, one of our top rated our instructors, for the tip. | |

| The Ice Man Saileth |
|
The dock in the middle of winter can sometimes be a lonely place. For reasons that totally elude me, some people get the notion that winter sailing is no fun. "Pashaw" sez I. The following are several excellent reasons to get up to the lake and enjoy a brisk Winter's sail. Become Members of the Twenty / Twenty Club and get your Man Card Stamped - You can become a member of the Twenty / Twenty Club by sailing in twenty MPH winds when the temperature is thirty-three degrees or less. At twenty mph and thirty-three degrees, the wind chill factor is twenty degrees, hence the twenty / twenty club. This will also earn you a stamp on your man card. (Ladies, you can get a stamp on your man card too. Man cards are issued for doing something many would consider not so bright, not for the plumbing you are packing.) Learn how not to foul your Foulies - The beauty of sailing is that gear is available for every occasion and this includes cold, wet, windy and just plain nasty weather. From the inside out you can layer up with long underwear over which you put warm stuff over which you put an outer layer of foulies to keep out the wind and water. Stuff your feet in a pair sea-boots and your head into that thing the terrorists wear to hide their face and you're all set. Depending on the colors you have chosen, you will look like a very scary Santa or Big Bird. The challenge comes when it is time to get rid of those 3 cups of coffee you had before you took off from the dock. When the boat is heeled 25 degrees and you are looking up at the head wrapped in more layers than King Tut, this can be somewhat challenging. It does provide great entertainment for your shipmates. Learn how measure apparent wind chill - Everyone understands the concept of wind chill, a blowing wind makes things colder. There are formulas and charts to figure it out. As sailors, we are well aware of the concept of true wind speed and apparent wind speed. Where there is true wind speed, there is true wind chill and where there is apparent wind, speed there is apparent wind chill. Calculating apparent wind chill is more art than science and is based on various factors, like when it becomes apparent that you can't feel your feet any more. Learn how to broach with grace - Winter weather systems march through Georgia much like Sherman did 145 years ago. Sherman liked to play with matches and break things. The typical winter weather patterns for North Georgia can bring strong winds, which make for great sailing and let you practice your reefing skills. For those who opt not to reef, there is always the joy of broaching. Hang on tight and learn the special broaching words, Oh S...... Lose your fear of drowning - Should the worst happen and you end up in the water as the boat sails off without you, fear not. You will freeze to death long before you can drown. Learn how to make snotcicles - Cold, wet, windy weather are the perfect conditions for snotcicles to form. Once you are out on the boat, you will be amazed at the sheer volume of the stuff that is coming out your nose and being whipped by the wind into your hair, your moustache (if so equipped) and just about everywhere else. After a while, you will become a seasoned winter sailor and will wear your snotcicles as mark of pride much like the angry bull. Learn how make hot toddies - Pack a thermos with your favorite hot toddy recipe. After a while it may not keep you warm, but if you made it right, you won't notice that you can't feel your toes and nose anymore. Learn how to build a Fire - At the end of the day, leave the winter wonder land of the lake behind and head back to your cave where you will toss a couple of logs on the grate, turn up the gas and throw in a match. Before you know it, you will have created fire. Spread your wet foulies out by the fire to dry. Grab yourself a bowl of chowder or chili and something warm to drink and start the re-warming process. As you sit by the glowing embers warming up your insides and outsides, grab your cruising guide for the BVI's, Windward Islands, or some other warm place and read a few pages, so when you fall asleep your dreams will be of toasty trade winds and warm tropical lagoons. Sweet Dreams, Nanook. See you next week at the lake at the "So you've struck an iceberg, now what?" seminar.
Here's to being in a boat with drink on the rocks rather than being in the drink with a boat on the rocks,

Regatta & Race Clinic
Saturday, March 13th,
Classroom: 10am til 1pm.
On the water: 2pm til 5pm
Regardless of your level competitiveness and regardless of your sailing skill, the LSA regattas have proven year after year to be an ideal sailing experience and allround fun time. Because everyone is welcomed, and the scoring system allows less experienced sailors to participate with past winners, the LSA regattas continue to have people return for more fun, friends and food.
The clinic is in 2 parts. In the classroom, we'll be sharing detailed rules and strategies of sail racing that is designed to get you informed and involved in The Passport Sailing Club's Spring Regatta Series. This includes how not to hit another boat and more importantly, how to get ahead of another boat.
After a lunch break, we head to Big Creek. On the water, we'll be reinforcing this information with a real hands on sailing/racing complete with a race course and instructors on each boat. You'll experience the tense starts, exhilerating upwind legs and relaxing downwide legs. And we keep the races very short so that you can do more than one.
If you've never raced, this is an ideal way to get started.
If you've raced before, this is an opportunity to refine your skills.
If you're experienced, this is an opportunity to become a skipper.
Don't miss this great opportunity to become race savy.
