| Charleston was a Trip |
|
Note to self: Plan a trip with 15 knot breezes, temps in the 70s, open cockpit design boat, and a port with sites to see.
Several LSA members had just that for the May 1st Charleston, SC. getaway. Sailing a Colgate 26 in reasonably steady South and Southwest breezes of up to 20 knots made for 2 ideal days of sailing.
The group sailed the Charleston harbor, under the Ravenel bridge, alongside the aircraft carrier Yorktown, then past Ft Sumpter out to the Atlantic. The crew reached to about 10 miles offshore both days.
And yes, dinners in historic Charleston were the expected delight of Charleston culture and cuisine, accompanied with wandering conversation. Plan to go sometime !

| Dear Capt. Noah T'all: Going Down Hill |
|

Dear Capt. Noah T'all, I get nervous every time I sail downwind. I am scared to death that I am going to accidentally gybe and break the boat or worse bop someone on the head. Do you have any tips that would help to ease my anxiety? B.Y. Thelee Dear B.Y., Sailing downwind can be a comfortable and fun way to sail. The boat is flat (level) so folks can have a sandwich or drink without everything sliding to leeward. Let's face it sometimes, the only way to get home is downwind. Sailing downwind does require attention to helmsmanship and sail trim. Here are a few tricks that will help you feel more comfortable and in control. 1. Avoid sailing directly downwind , i.e. wind coming directly over the stern (aka from 6 o'clock). Sail about 20 or 25 degrees higher than dead down wind. 2. Sail a straight course - Once you have established a safe course, sail in a straight line. Line the mast up with something on shore and keep them in line. Many unintended gybes are a result of a distracted helmsman who lets the boat drift too far down wind.
3. Don't let the mast head fly point toward the mainsail side of the boat. If it does, you are sailing by the lee and could gybe. A source of anxiety. 4. If the jib is trimmed to the same side of the boat as the mainsail and tries to go to the other side, the main won't be far behind. 5. If the leach of the main curls toward the center of the boat, it is an indication that you are sailing by the lee and getting ready to gybe. 6. Tighten up on the vang if the boat has one. This decreases twist in the sail and helps prevent the boat from rolling and lesson the chance of a gybe. 7. Rig a preventer - a line from a center strong point on the boom to a strong point on the deck just aft of the shrouds that will keep the boom in place. 8. Watch for wind shifts. You can control your steering and your sail trim but you can't control a wind shift. Stay alert. 9. On a boat with a tiller, just "push the boom away." If you feel that the boat is about to gybe, just push the tiller toward the boom . This will head you up into the wind and away from a possible gybe. 10. Finally, the more you practice the more comfortable you will become. The answers to last month's questions are: Astern - behind a vessel - going backwards - towards the stern Abaft - Behind - " the cockpit is abaft the mast" Abeam - At a right angles to a boat, ship or plane. Beam - The width of a boat. For next time what does "handsomely" mean in maritime lingo? Safe Sailing, Capt. Noah T'all

| Museless Musings |
|
Shallow Thought by HonezMy muse left the dock without me this month so I have decided to steal, I mean borrow a few entries from the Sailing Pocket Dictionary by Henry Beard and Roy Mckie. Hope you enjoy! Leeward - Pronounced "Lourdes," shortened to "loo." The direction in which objects, liquids, and other matter may be thrown without the risk of reencountering them in the immediate future. Rafting - Neighborly sailing custom in which several boats moor alongside one another and exchange splinters, samples of hull paint, and pieces of broken brightwork. Boarding - Knowledgeable sailors do not "get on" a boat or "climb in" a boat - they board a boat. And prudent individuals do not "stay behind," "keep off," or "say to hell with it" - they remain ashore. Fast - Firmly attached, as for example a rope made fast to a piling. Also used to describe a boat that has run aground. Thus, a boat that appears to be unusually slow may in fact be "fast." Nautical terminology is full of these amusing paradoxes! Fluke - The portion of an anchor that digs securely into the bottom, holding a boat in place; also, any occasion when this occurs on the first try. Halyard - Line used to raise (hoist) or lower (douse) a sail to a point about two-thirds of the way up or halfway down where the line gets snagged (fouled) and hops out of the little pulley (piece o'crap) at the tippy-top (pique) of the mast . Helmsman - Traditional term for whoever is at the tiller or wheel of a boat, but politically correct nautical American seapeople prefer gender-neutral substitutes such as helmsperson, steering committee, directionally tasked crew member, or individual filling a boat's unmet course-holding needs. Pool Party - The big blow out LSA sailors will have when their lake fills back up or any of a series of pre-parties they will have to practice for the big FULL POOL PARTY. Five feet to go to 1071! Come on out to the lake this week and sail the deep green waters of Lake Lanier. I will be the one on the dock running the 1071or Bust Betting Pool and looking for my lost muse to sail back over the horizon. _/)
