A Letter from Matt

We are extremely proud to announce that The American Sailing Association has awarded Lanier Sailing Academy "Outstanding School of the Year for 2007" !!

Please keep in mind this is a difficult award to earn and is even more difficult to achieve two years in a row !!  Yes, LSA received the same award in 2006 !!

We are also very proud to announce that two (2) of our instructors received "Outstanding Instructor of the Year for 2007".  Congratulations to John Struchen and Bill Sigmund !!  Yes, Ron Rose received the same award in 2006 !!

This is the quality that we bring to every aspect of coaching and teaching our Passport Sailing Club members as well as our students !!
Sailing Lifestyle
Mentally, many of us prefer the island lifestyle. Here are two items to help you stay connected during the cooler weather.....

DVD capt ron Instructional
(?) Video: Captain Ron

Here are two unprofessional reviews from Amazon.com:
"I swear I just watched Captain Ron today and just had to write and say how great this movie still is even if you've seen it a million times. I saw it in theaters! I bought the video! I got the laserdisc! Wanted the Soundtrack on CD like crazy but they didn't make one. For crying out loud, Touchstone, don't you know a Cult Film when you see one! This movie has a following!"

"Everyone that sees this movie agrees that it is funny, but it's one of those flicks that nobody likes to admit that they like. The movie is quite humorous and has a pretty good plot, but in the end, it is pretty dorky. The presence of Kurt Russell in the cast definitely saves this one from eternal B-movie hell, as he plays a very funny free-lance yacht captain who drives almost all of the comedy in the movie. I should not be too harsh though, as it is a good movie. I own it and enjoy it, and you will too. Just make sure you buy it on sale.   Click here for link to Amazon.com.

Jimmy BuffettBoats - Beaches - Bars - Ballads
The Ultimate Jimmy Buffett Collection !!

Here it is.  The greatest collection of Jimmy Buffett songs available today.  More than 70 songs and over three hours of non-stop Jimmy.  Just log onto www.seafaring.com to order.

When the winds a-blowing, the boats a-sailing, the boat drinks are a-flowin, the friends are a-bonding, the bikinis are a-wearing and the tunes are a-crankin, you must have Jimmy onboard !

Editor's note: This, along with Bob Marley Live, are safe starting points for island-attitude music.  Look for reviews of lesser known artists like Eric Kunzel and Eileen Quinn.
The Alternate Lifestyle (Pirateering)
Pirate picIt's amazing how the modern sailing world has adopted some of the traditions of the centuries old pirate ways.  Yes, most of the crazed behaviors (raping, pillaging, plundering, hijacking and swashbuckling) are completely illegal, yet many of their organizational ideas were ahead of their time.

A Pirates Pledge:
All adherents of the code pledge to be bound together as a brotherhood of pirates, sharing alike in life's fortunes and troubles.  Every member shall have an equal vote in the affairs of the moment and an equal share of the provisions.  Every pirate shall obey the code.  Anyone who fails to do so shall be marooned on a desert island and left ashore with a loaf of bread or hardtack, a bottle of water (if any exists) and a pistol with one load (for suicide).

Division of Spoils
The Captain shall have two shares of a prize, The Quartermaster shall have one-and-three-quarter shares.  The Surgeon shall have one-and-one-half shares.  The Master Gunner, Carpenter, Sailmaster and Boatswain shall receive one-and-one-quarter shares.  All others shall have one share each.  The company may vote to temporarily withhold the Cook's share should his food kill a shipmate.

Compensation for Injuries
Compensations shall be as follows, in pieces of eight.
Loss of right arm             800
Loss of left arm              750
Loss of right leg              500
Loss of left leg                400
Fight wound                   100
Loss of eye                    200
Loss of ear                      30
Loss of finger                 100
Loss of trigger finger       200
Loss of pinky finger         Life be cruel, mate

Boat Drinks: by Ann Kustoff
Ann thinking w chartValentine's Day is just around the corner and a sailboat and the proper cocktail are exactly what you need to make the day just right. Here are a few recipe ideas:

Hot Cockpit Sangria-- for a romantic sail for two
2 (750 milliliter) bottles Rioja (Spanish red wine)
1 cup brandy
1 bag frozen cherries
1 bag frozen peaches
1 orange, sliced
2 cinnamon sticks
1 cup simple syrup (make with 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water and 1 zested orange peel boiled and then simmered for 5 minutes)
Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker. Put setting on HIGH for 1 hour. Reduce to warm to hold temperature. Ladle into a good thermos from the slow cooker. Be sure to include some fruit in the cups. Garnish with orange peel and snuggle up

The Wing on Wing-- for those celebrating the freedom of the single life

1 shot sweet vermouth
1 shot dark rum
1/2 shot orange juice
Champange

Put the vermouth, rum and orange juice into a Champagne flute. Add in Champagne to fill. Toss on a slice of banana for a tropical accent.

Happy Valentines Day

Dinghy Notes - Shallow Thoughts from Honez  (Rich Jones)
Know your Nautical Terminology

We are all aware that in sailing there are special terms that describe the parts of the boat and many of the actions we need to accomplish to make the boat go.  Do not fear; these words have a purpose and more importantly, they make you sound salty and cool in the bar.  Below are some examples courtesy of  "Sailing, a Lubber's Dictionary."

Weather Helm - Marked tendency of a sailboat to turn into the wind, even when the rudder is centered.  This is easily countered by wedging a heavy object against the tiller. See Crew.

Crew - Heavy, stationary objects used on boats to hold down corners of charts, anchor cushions in place and dampen sudden movements of the boom.

Latitude and Longitude - A series of imaginary lines on the earth's surface which are used as an aid to navigation.  Since they are invisible, many mariners find them of limited usefulness.

Heeling - A basic process affecting all sailboats which begins with the boat leaning over as the wind presses on one side of its sails and ends as the sailboat exhibits its natural tendency to come to a state of rest on the sea bottom.

Spar -  1.  Any pole on a boat used to carry or shape sails.  2.  To exchange blows with such a pole, particularly horizontal booms, in an effort to restrain or adjust them, a process that usually results in the crew member involved getting "decked," "kissing the canvas," or  "taking a dive."

Ahoy - The first in series of four-letter words exchanged by skippers as their boats approach one another.

Yawl come on out to lake, Hal is right, there is plenty of water and the wind this time of year is great. The lake has some neat new islands (complete with beautiful red clay beaches) to be discovered and named. Leggett Land is taken as is Schlengerville and Bubbas Bayou.  Get your claim in soon; the Red Clay Keys are not going to be here forever.  See you on the lake, and don't forget to say Ahoy.
