Greetings to our clients, colleagues, and friends, Summer is upon us and I hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day weekend. Our family went to the LA Galaxy game and fireworks show on the 4th and had a wonderful time; too bad the Galaxy could not pull off a win. Oh well, I still had a great time with the family and that is really what holidays are all about. For many, this summer means staying closer to home for obvious reasons. There are many fun things to do in southern California and no matter where you live, there seems to be that place close by that you have always wanted to see, but just have not gotten around to as yet. This is a good time to look into these places of curiosity and make it a destination to check off your list of places to see some day. We had never been to a town called Julian in the San Diego area and had it not been for the fires in that area a few years ago, may still not have known it existed. This historic town was saved from the fires and this past January while visiting San Diego, we made a point to get to know Julian. It was a lunch stop on our way home and well worth it. No matter what you do this summer for vacation or time of relaxation, I hope you have a wonderful summer and do enjoy some time away from your labor of love. Be safe and refreshed even if that means running through the sprinklers - it will cool you off and make you feel like a kid again - and there's nothing wrong with that. All the best, John R. Managing the cost of "Going Green"
--- Poor Air Quality for 2008 Beijing Olympics --- No More Ice for Polar Bears --- Gas Prices on the Rise As these events come closer to our daily lives, they also drive the growing importance of becoming a "Green Business". "Going Green" has ongoing costs from a number of areas such as: the time to setup and manage a program, changing suppliers, product development, new equipment purchases, marketing changes, and sustainability audits. When consumers turn their purchasing power toward Green Businesses, the question remains: How do businesses fund the cost of "Going Green"? Finding the right funding for a business makes all the difference. Factoring remains one of the most flexible financing options available. It funds business changes and growth without using a loan or requiring equity sharing. Factoring frees up cash from aging accounts receivables and provides credit and accounts receivables management. It helps build stronger supplier relationships by helping businesses taking advantage of advance payment terms. Factoring is tax-deductible and can be used for a short or long period of time. It also can be combined with other types of financing. To find out more about your local Green Business Program go to the website: http://greenbiz.abag.ca.gov/GreenResources.html

Long Beach Port
The Green Port Policy started in 2005 was created as a guide for decision making and establishing a framework for environmentally friendly Port operations In a program called the Clean Air Action Plan, restrictions have been made to ban old and "dirty" trucks from the Port. The goal of the Plan is to reduce air pollution by 80% at the harbor by 2012. The first step to this program will begin October 1, 2008 seeing that all trucks that are older than 1988 be banned. By 2012, any truck older than 2006, not meeting the emission will be banned from the port. Long Beach "concession" plan allows truckers to lease or own a truck for as little as $500 a month, including pre-paid maintenance. Here are some important facts and information provided by the Port of LB:
- On 11/5/07 LB Harbor Commission bans the oldest and dirtiest trucks from operating at LB port
- Truckers need to have a federal Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
- All trucks that do not meet 2007 emission standards by 2012 will be banned
- To finance the $2 billion truck replacement program, the Port of Long Beach will levy a fee on loaded containers ($35 per load twenty-foot equivalent unit) beginning 10/1/08
- Port of LB Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Program offers contracting opportunities to small businesses by awarding 25% of Port contracts.
- The Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project, a proposed $750-million, 10 yr project that would create about 14,000 new, permanent jobs and cut air pollution at two port terminals by more than 50%.
- On 7/7/08 Port of LB has ordered $35 million for 300 heavy-duty trucks to help any operator seeking new trucks:
- 100 Sterling liquefied natural gas-powered trucks
- 200 Freightliner clean diesel-powered vehicles
