Dear ISD Families,

If you have a child in grades two through five, he or she was administered the Degrees of Reading Power test this week.  As you know, this standardized reading test is administered in the fall and then again in the spring as part of the CMT battery for grades three through five and separately for grade two.  The test is comprised of non-fiction reading passages containing sentences with blanks in them.  The passages begin simply but get progressively longer and much more difficult.  The results of the test tell us the level of reading book your child should be instructed in, which is appropriately challenging and what they can read independently without teacher instruction.  We will receive the results later this fall.  As a school, we have significantly increased the focus on non-fiction reading as part of our School Improvement Plan.  We will continue to do so as we construct this year's plan.  Please try to support this at home in the books you select to read to your child.

Third graders will also be taking a battery of tests known as the Stanford Achievement Test and the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test.  You should have received a parent booklet this week which contains more details about these tests. The SAT tests achievement in the academic subject areas including reading, math and language with several subtests administered under each subject over a series of days.  The OLSAT tests a student's individual ability as it relates to their innate potential.  This test is done in one sitting.  If your child is absent, every attempt will be made to administer a make-up test.  We traditionally receive these results in December which will be reviewed by the teachers and me.

Many parents are working hard to make tomorrow's Fun Run and Tag Sale a huge success.  Thank you to all of you involved.  I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

MESSAGE FROM SCHOOL NURSE

Lice/Nits:

Parents have received a letter from Mrs. Ricci addressing the lice/nits found on several students at ISD.  This is a district wide issue and I must thank parents who are taking a pro-active approach to this by checking their children at home as part of the regular home routine and who have reported finding this problem to me.  This issue has not become as prevalent as it is in other schools due to this pro-active approach.  Thank you ISD Parents!

Illness:

Parents are encouraged to read the Guidelines for Childhood Illnesses sent home in this week's Friday folder. Please follow these guidelines. If you have any questions/concerns, I will be happy to address them. Please call me at ISD ( 203-698-6056).

We are heading into flu season, parents may want to consider having their children vaccinated after discussing this topic with your pediatrician.

Reminder:

3rd grade physical exams forms are due and many parents are handing in the forms after their child's exams. Please make a copy for yourselves and it is a good idea to keep a health folder for each child at home. Please continue to hand in the HAR-3 physical exam forms as your children see their doctors.  All forms must be in, per Greenwich Public School requirements, during the 3rd grade school year (2012-2013). Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

I will be starting health screenings in October running into December. 5th grade students will have hearing, vision and postural screenings done.  1st, 2nd and 4th grade students will have hearing and vision screenings done. A follow up letter will be sent to parents of any students who have not passed the screenings. Please call me if you have any questions- 203-698-6056.

Thank you,

Carmen M. Claudio-Albarran, RN, BSN
