Dear ISD Families,

We have had a smooth opening to the 2012-13 school year.  The staff was ready to greet 368 students in a bright, sparkling school.  Along with our returning students, we welcome everyone, including 61 kindergartners and 22 new students in grades one through five.  Some of these new students applied through the lottery process and were offered spaces, while others came as far as Hong Kong and England and moved into our attendance area.

The first week of school always brings issues with the bus schedules.  As of this writing, Bus 1 and Bus 2 are running a little late in arriving to our school in the afternoon, resulting in some students arriving late to their bus stops.  There have been slight improvements everyday so my hope is things will be in place by next week.  Please be assured we are closely monitoring the situations both in the morning and the afternoon.

Open House is scheduled for Thurs., 9/13 for the elementary schools this year.  This is a little earlier than usual so it will be coming up shortly.  Please look for a specific memo to come home next week regarding the evening's schedule and it will be posted on the school's website, as well.

Spring CMT test result reports have just arrived and will be sent home on Sept. 14th.  If you are a parent of a current 4th or 5th grader, you may access your child's test results through the parent portal.  Reports for our last year's fifth graders will be sent home by the middle school.  Overall, I am very pleased with the school's results, which showed significant improvement in some areas.

Information regarding the PTA's Afters program will be forthcoming as well.  Please look for that information as the PTA always offers an eclectic and interesting array of choice for students to choose from to extend their interests or find new ones.

A lot of information is sent home or made available at the beginning of the new school year. If you have questions now, or at anytime, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher, the office or me depending on the nature of your questions.

I wish you all a wonderful, long weekend.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

ISD Mural - In Loving Memory of Lisa Zimmerman

Located in the hall opposite the school office.

Lisa embodied the IB characteristics of ISD and lived her life creating bridges, closing gaps, & welcoming view points as different as night and day.  Friends of Lisa, inspired by her approach to life commissioned this beautiful work of art by artist Michael Kramer.  The mural captures the spirit of the ISD global learner found within the walls of our school.

Media Center News

  • Media is an important class for the K-5 students each week.  During each 45-minute class, students learn about research strategies, technology, communication, digital citizenship, and literature.

  • In addition to this 45-minute class, each week students visit the computer lab for typing practice and technology lessons. Each of these classes lasts 30 minutes.Teachers may sign up for additional lab time for research and projects that involve technology.

  • Students in grades 1-5 are allowed to check out up to 4 books. The checkout period is 3 weeks with an option to renew one time.

  • Kindergarten students begin the year by checking out 2 books per week.  We are teaching them to take responsibility for their own books, and we ask that they return their 2 books each week.  Beginning in January, they are allowed to check out 3 books each week.

  • Kindergarten and second grade students receive Media bags in which they carry their books to and from school each week. They should have a doorknob or hook at home on which they hang their bag so that they can pull and return books at they read them.

For additional typing practice, click on the BBC Typing Link under "IB Virtual Resources" on our ISD home page.

I hope to meet many of you at Open House - please stop by the Media Center to say hello!

Reminders for parents:

Grade 3 physical exam form is required for those students in 3rd grade. Many are being handed in as the physical exams are completed. Thank you for your diligence in this matter!
For those parents who have forgotten: this is a MANDATORY HEALTH REQUIREMENT.

Head lice: Your diligence in inspecting your children last year helped tremendously in preventing an infestation of lice at ISD. There were a few cases but I'm sure not the number of cases one sees at other schools.  Please continue to inspect your children regularly during their morning or evening routines and especially if your child has been away on vacation, to a sleepover or other public areas where equipment or seats are shared.  Remind your children not to share personal items!  If you have any concerns that your child has any symptoms of head lice or are not sure, please give me a call.  I will check your child and if head lice is found, I will check the class and siblings at ISD (if the siblings are at other schools, I will call that school's nurse). If another case is found a class letter will be sent home. Students with head lice are sent home to be treated and before coming back into the classroom will need to be checked and cleared by me.  I will re-check the student in 2 weeks for signs of re-infestation. If you have found head lice and treated your child at home, even over the weekend, then please let me know. All information is kept confidential.

At the same time you check your child/children for head lice, please also check for the presence of ticks.  Any ticks I find can be saved in a sealed envelope for you to take to the Department of Health and have examined for disease.

Please contact me with any concerns you may have (203-637-3800/ 698-6056).

Thank you,

Please make a donation of any amount by completing a Membership Form  and returning it at your earliest convenience to the main office.

Please remember that membership contributions of $15 or higher will receive a complimentary ISD school directory (to be distributed in October.)

recycle logo Welcome to The Green Dragon!

Let's start the school year off right with the three R's.  Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!  The ISD Tag Sale is just around the corner.  Start putting aside your unwanted items to donate for the Tag Sale.  You'll be reducing clutter in your home, helping raise money for our school, and Tag Sale shoppers will reuse and recycle rather than buying new.

Be sure to check the Green Dragon each week for green tips, eco-facts, and earth friendly projects happening at ISD.
