Discovering Your Library: Wangenheim Rare Books Room
 The elegant Wangenheim Rare Books Room, on the Central Library's third floor, contains a collection of rare books, manuscripts and artifacts illustrating the development of books in all its aspects - paper making, book binding, book illustration, and the history of printing. It spans more than 4,000 years.

New Library Creates Local Jobs
 A recent Union-Tribune article reports that the New Central Library project is one of the few major infrastructure projects under way in San Diego, with more than 100 construction workers on the site at any given time.  Remembering Library Hero John McAllister
It is with deep regret we announce John McAllister, President of the Friends of the San Diego Public Library, passed away on December 2. John was a longtime Library supporter and advocate, serving as President of the Friends of the San Diego Public Library since 2009. Recently, John helped head successful community-wide efforts to maintain public funding to the Library system. Introduction to Humanistic Judaism
"Israel and Zionism" is the 9th class in kahal Am's stimulating 10-part series on the History and Philosophy of Humanistic Judaism. Even if you have not attended previous classes you may join this class because each class subject can stand alone. The class includes a video lecture by Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine followed by a question and answer session.

Artist Talk: Michael Wheelden
Artist Michael Wheelden will discuss his exhibit "Panted Desert," currently on display at the Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library. The long-awaited exhibit brings a new twist to the subject that Wheelden has been exploring for decades: the vernacular residential architecture common to the region's older neighborhoods.

Yuko Maruyama Jazz Trio
Trained in Japan as a classical pianist, Yuko earned a master's degree in jazz studies from USC. In her compositions and performance she often incorporates Latin rhythms, clever harmony and melodic structure, while maintaining the traditional flavors of jazz.

The Adventures of Fearless Girls, written by Lily Birmingham, is based on Birmingham's childhood in Taiwan and tells fun stories of elementary school kids that are full of Chinese cultural content and universal children's experiences.

Author Monta Bryant will lead parents and their young babies in this fun and dynamic signing story time. These classes help encourage bonding and communication by children that are ready, but can't quite bridge the gap to full speech.

Learn how exercise can help you stay healthy and independent as you age. Exercise Physiologist Russell Rowe will teach adults over 50 how to exercise safely, stay motivated and maintain good nutrition. Sample exercises will be provided to help get you started!

The 2012 Winter/Spring Concert Series will begin with a performance by the California Consort, San Diego's classical powerhouse. Music lovers will delight in this rare performance of both Schubert's famous "Trout" Quintet from 1819 and Johann Nepomuk Hummel's lesser-known Piano Quintet.
