Cedar Village E-News
May 18, 2012

Greetings!

This week's very special event was our annual 8 over 80 dinner, held May 17.  A crowd of 350 celebrated with our wonderful honorees--Bob Betagole, Frank and Rosemary Bloom, Werner Koppel, Bernie Dave, Debbie Fox, Pat and Morry Passer, Ruth Schwartz and Phyllis Sewell. Each of these individuals has an amazing story to tell as well as wisdom to share. Their volunteer efforts have all been life-long, defining and very meaningful. We were all inspired, educated and motivated by their words. We also heard the Cedar Village Choir, under the direction of our music therapist, Jude Jones, and that made a perfect beginning to the evening. If you missed it, please join us next year!  And if you know someone over the age of 80 who would be a good candidate for this honor, watch for nomination forms in the Fall.

I also had the privilege of speaking to a meeting of the Warren County Bar Association this week. My topic? The Shalom Center for Elder Abuse Prevention at Cedar Village. We all should know the warning signs--social isolation of an older adult, stories of injuries with conflicting accounts by the older adult and the caregiver, changes in financial patterns with large "gifts" a new addition, a previously well groomed older adult who is now disheveled. Not all of these equals abuse, of course, but they are indicators that should prompt all of us to ask more questions. If you want to learn more, join us on June 14 for a half day symposium on elder abuse. Education and community awareness are step one unmaking our community a safer place for older adults.

All the best,

In our busy lives, there seems to be no shortage of things to worry about. When you think about it though, most of our worries have to do with what has already happened or what hasn't even happened yet. Here is a useful article about staying "in the moment" and focusing on the present. The sympathetic and autonomic nervous systems are discussed as well as a method of deep breathing to help with relaxation. If you have tension in your muscles from injury or posture problems, our team of exceptional therapists are here to help you!
