Greetings!
What a great week! We began with Sunday's Give-a-Day event, sponsored by the Jewish Federation and we had volunteers here to do jewelry making with our residents on Sunday afternoon. It is always wonderful to be a part of these community events and to bring some new faces out to Cedar Village! On Tuesday, we had the special treat of a visit from Don Shulman. Don is the new President and CEO of the Association for Jewish Aging Services, which represents Jewish retirement communities and long term care facilities across the United States and Canada. Don began his new job in early March and has just begun to visit member sites. In fact, Cedar Village was the first place he has visited so we were thrilled to "set the bar" for our colleagues. Don had breakfast with some of our board members, toured the campus, had lunch with the management team and even spoke at the Tenant's Association meeting, which is a monthly meeting for our Oak View and Fountain View folks. He even had the opportunity to attend a wonderful concert which featured both our Cedar Village Choir and the Sharonville Senior Center Choir, under the direction of our music therapist, Jude Jones. Don was most impressed with everything and everyone! I had the treat of hosting Book Club this week. As you may know, I have a monthly book club with our residents and have anywhere from 6-10 people around the table, discussing the book we read and other related topics. The book we just finished is called "The Little Russian" by Susan Sherman. It is the story of a woman, her husband and family set in the early 1900's in the area known as Little Russia. It was a great hit with our group and sparked a lot of lively discussion about pogroms, about family members that came from eastern Europe and about our perceptions of the main characters. The book's heroine is a woman named Berta and we had some interesting dialogue about whether or not we would want to befriend a woman like Berta! Now you have to read the book and let us know what you think too! On Wednesday evening, we held our Resident of the Month event for May. We honored three residents, each of whom had an amazing story to share. We had lots of family members in the audience, including many young children who are great grandchildren of the individuals being honored. It was, as always, a meaningful, inspiring and unforgettable event. Thursday evening was highlighted by the Cedar Village Board of Trustees annual meeting. We added four new members to our board-Merrie Stillpass; Judah Spetner; Paula Jarnicki and Patti Heldman and we are delighted to have them join us. We said farewell to board members whose terms have ended-Roz Harkavy; Gloria Lipson; Larry Neuman and Donald Kaplan and thanked them for having shared their talents with Cedar Village. And we congratulated Jay Price as he concluded his term as board chair. Jay has been a tremendously supportive and engaged chair and has truly left his mark on Cedar Village. The new board chair, whom we are looking forward to working with, is Bob Rosen. Vice chair is Rachel Schild, Treasurer is Chuck Bissinger, Assistant Treasurer is Michael Kadetz; Secretary is Barb Reed and Assistant Secretary is Mark Mayer. The year ahead will be another busy and productive one for Cedar Village and we are glad to have all of these wonderful individuals working with us and helping to move Cedar Village forward. Last but far from least, Cedar Village Hospice celebrated its one year anniversary today! Although we have began providing Comfort Care services more than a year ago, our official licensure and Medicare certification were completed on May 5, 2011. Since the inception of our hospice, we have cared for more than 40 patients, and their families. Cedar Village Hospice offers a full range of services for those with a diagnosis of six months or less to live. Our dedicated team, including Medical Director, nurses, aides, chaplain and social worker is committed to providing the highest quality compassionate care for individuals who live at Cedar Village or anywhere in the greater Cincinnati community. Please call us for more information or to schedule an appointment for an assessment. All the best, Carol Silver Elliott CEO/President
