Cedar Village E-News
April 20, 2012

Greetings!

Hope you have had a great week-we have had many great moments in ours!  One of my highlights this week has been the Leading Age Ohio STARS program.  Leading Age Ohio is the organization that represents all of the nonprofit retirement and long term care communities in our State. Each year, in every region, they run the "STARS" program which provides an opportunity for managers, staff, residents and families to nominate non-management personnel for recognition.  The nomination forms are submitted and each organization has a certain number of "STARS" that are honored at a luncheon event.  We had eight STARS this year-Pam Layliev, Nursing; Nick Winkler, Transportation; Jackie Ball, Environmental Services; Maletha Basten, Dining Services; Pam Burket, Social Work; Monika Booth, Therapy; Beth Puckett, MDS.  And we had lots more nominations so we'll be celebrating all of our nominated folks with a special luncheon next week.  Congratulations to all for a job well done!

Our Chesed Corps was busy this week as well. We made our 5th visit to the Ronald McDonald House at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.  Yesterday our resident volunteers made turkey wraps and veggie wraps and today we took those sandwiches, along with soup, salad, fruit salad, cookies and beverages and served lunch to the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.  The residents set up lunch, they serve and they also sit and visit with the many families that are there.  People come from all over to have their children treated at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and we heard some stories that touched us all deeply. It was a great experience as it always is and the staff and families are always delighted to see our residents.  This is just one of many projects that our Chesed Corps does-we think it is an important way for our folks to continue their roles as community leaders and volunteers and it benefits all of us, those we help and all of us who participate.

Donations2Dollars is coming to Cedar Village and we are very excited!  What is Donations2Dollars?  It is a way for all of us to turn unwanted items that we have at home into dollars that will benefit Cedar Village!  We'll be sharing more details in the weeks ahead including what kinds of items are accepted and how to donate them to us.  We'll collect them at Cedar Village, work with Dollars2Donations to get them sold and you will end up with a tax deduction and the satisfaction of knowing you've helped Cedar Village. Stay tuned for details!

Osteoporosis is a common problem of aging as bones become less dense and weaker. The risk of fractures from a fall increases with osteoporosis and fractures can result in poor mobility and lost independence. Learn how exercise can help to strengthen weak bones.

The Rehabilitation Center at Cedar Village can work with you to develop an exercise program, improve balance and decrease the risk of falls.

For more information, please contact Debi Tyler, Director of Rehabilitation at dtyler@cedarvillage.org.

Before you begin an exercise program, consult with your physician.

The Shalom Center for Elder Abuse Prevention is made possible with the generous support from the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati.
