Greetings!
There is only one way that I can begin this week's newsletter and that is to share a bit about the conference some of us attended this week. Our national organization, the Association for Jewish Aging Services (AJAS), represents Jewish retirement communities and senior housing from around the United States and Canada. Our annual conference is a time for us to get together, share ideas and hear some wonderful and inspiring speakers. It is also the time that national awards are presented, including Trustee of the Year and Professional of the Year. Last year, we were delighted to see Andy Shott selected as Trustee of the Year. This year, I had the absolute privilege of presenting the Professional of the Year award to Janet Bowling, Cedar Village's Director of Nursing. Janet has been with Cedar Village since 1999. She is the essence of a nursing leader-combining outstanding management skills with caring and compassion. Janet manages difficult situations with aplomb, she is always calm and always fair. She also has an innate ability to meet our residents "where they are" and helping them in a way that is always respectful and loving. We are so very proud that Janet received this award and even more proud that she is an integral part of our leadership team. At the conference, we also had a chance to present on some of our great programs. Marcia Westcott, Director of Resident Programming, spoke about our Chesed Corps, the residents who volunteer on a regular basis for special projects throughout our community. The Chesed Corps creates weekly Shabbat baskets for delivery to Jewish patients in area hospitals. They have made and served lunch at the Ronald McDonald House four times; done an "unbirthday party" at the Center for Respite Care and spent an evening dining and singing with folks at Halom House and more. We are very proud of the Chesed project and I heard rave reviews for Marcia's presentation. I also had the opportunity to present and spoke about our new Rehab Center and all of the changes we have implemented in recent years as part of our overall plan for the future. It was great fun to be able to share those highlights with my colleagues from around North America! Mark your calendar for some special events next week! On Tuesday afternoon, at 2 p.m., we'll be showing the film"Nicky's Family" in the Wilbur and Mary Jean Cohen Religious and Cultural Center. It's a film that was shown at the recent Jewish and Israeli film festival in Cincinnati and the story is so powerful, we wanted to share it with our residents. Feel free to join us! On Wednesday evening, we will have an important program presented by nationally known expert on dementia,Teepa Snow. Teepa will be speaking on "Something's Changing with My Loved One," and will help all of us to understand not only the signs and signals of cognitive impairment but how to help our loved ones and ourselves. The program will begin with a dessert reception at 6:45 p.m. followed by Teepa's talk at 7:15 p.m. It is free and open to the public so please join us! All the best, Carol Silver Elliott CEO/President

Managing low back pain
Low back pain is a common problem which can be caused by a variety of factors. Learn what those risk factors are and what treatment options are available. A new modality that has proven effective for back pain is the medical laser, a non-invasive technique to help reduce pain and inflammation.
Pain relief is often immediate and lasts beyond the treatment session. Cedar Village is the only rehabilitation center in the area to use a Class IV Laser. For more information, please contact Debi Tyler, Director of Rehabilitation at dtyler@cedarvillage.org.
