Cedar Village E-News

September 9, 2011

Greetings!

September has begun with a lot of activity at Cedar Village!  We had a spectacular Labor Day program, featuring a woodwind trio playing patriotic music. It was a full house.  At one point in the program, they played a medley of the songs associated with the different branches of our armed forces. They asked veterans of those branches to stand as their song was played, if they were able. What a moment, watching some of our residents standing ramrod straight and showing true pride in their military service.

On Wednesday evening, it was our September Resident of the Month event. As always, the stories of these individuals were powerful and the words of wisdom they shared were lessons to us all.  It is always a remarkable evening and one that has lasting impact. Join us on the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. In the Wilbur and Mary Jean Cohen Religious and Cultural Center. We'd love to see you!

We've also been graced by the presence of Teepa Snow this week. Teepa is a nationally known expert on dementia and working with individuals who have dementia, a large segment of our Cedar Village population. We have Teepa with us quarterly and she is helping to raise our skills, show us best practices in working with our residents and helping develop individual strategies for effective care for specific residents. We have an abiding commitment to quality care and to ongoing learning and growth for our staff. Teepa helps us make that commitment a reality.

On Thursday and Friday, several members of our management team were at the annual conference of our state organization, LeadingAge Ohio. On Thursday, Marcia Westcott and I spoke, presenting a program entitled "Engaging Residents through Volunteer Opportunities." We shared the story of our Chesed Corps and the many ways in which our residents continue to play active roles in the community. On Thursday evening, we were delighted to receive the state-wide award for Excellence in Skilled Nursing Care. It was presented for our Opening Minds through Art program, which we have in partnership with the Scripps Gerontology Center of Miami University. It is a big honor and we all felt very privileged to receive it.

Holidays are coming! Don't forget that we have a full schedule of services, both Orthodox and Reform. If you'd like to share the holidays (or some part of them) with your loved ones who live at Cedar Village, we welcome you to join us.

All the best,
