Greetings!
It has to be a great week when it begins with the Cedar Village Golf Classic! In our 12th year, we were blessed with absolutely perfect weather and a near record number of golfers and sponsors. We had a wonderful day including fun with a silent auction, a lively raffle and great meals. It takes a lot of effort on the part of both volunteers and staff to make an event like the Golf Classic not just a reality, but also a success. We are fortunate to have both-a strong team that works hard to make sure that it's a great event and a memorable day. And they did it again this year! Many thanks to our Golf Committee and its' great co-chairs, Barb Reed and Mark Mayer. Many thanks to our staff leadership of Sally Korkin and Angela Ratliff. Of course, no "thank you's'" for golf would be complete without recognizing our special "brisket ladies," Lesley Loon and Stephanie Gilinsky who spend countless hours in the Cedar Village kitchens preparing their very special (top secret!)brisket recipe. It has become our tradition to serve their delicious brisket for dinner after golf and they cook almost 150 pounds of brisket to prepare for the day! We suspect that some folks come for the golf and others just for the brisket! Regardless, we are happy to have them all with us and all supporting Cedar Village. Funds raised from the Golf Classic will be used for the new Rehab Center project that is underway.
Tuesday afternoon found our Chesed Corps busily assembling wraps in the Deli. The turkey and veggie wraps were packed with other food, including soup and salad, fruit, cookies and beverages and the Chesed team of residents and staff made their 4th visit to the Ronald McDonald House at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. It is an incredible experience to talk with these families, meet some of the children who are being cared for and provide them with a little "home cooked comfort." All of the families are so grateful and all of us benefit enormously from the experience. We are very fortunate to have Children's Hospital, which is clearly world renowned. We met two families from Greece, a family from Croatia and people from Florida, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, all of whom had brought their loved ones here for care. The stories are incredible and so touching and we are privileged to be able to help even in this small way. While we were there we were also filming some video about our Chesed Corps. On September 8, Marcia Westcott, Director of Resident Programming and I will be speaking at our state conference (Leading Age Ohio) in Columbus. Our topic is resident volunteers and Chesed is one way our residents do continue to volunteer and give back to the community.
As you may know, we have been working on a project to provide better housing for our Orthodox rabbi on Shabbat and holidays. We have both our full time rabbi, Rabbi Yudin, and a couple of others who provide Shabbat and holiday coverage and all of them have young families. We've used our existing Cedar Village guest rooms but that space is both not adequate and it keeps us from having those rooms available for visiting family members. The solution has been the placement of a modular home, near the Oak View apartments, which will be used for the rabbis (and for other guests, if necessary, during the week). The home was turned over to us by the contractor this week and on Thursday afternoon we gave "tours" for residents and staff who have been curiously watching the process. It was fun for all and we're excited that the house will be put to use in a week or two.
On Friday afternoon, we took a group on an outing to see the film "Sarah's Key." Many of them had read the book either on their own or with the Hadassah book club. We'd gotten a number of requests so we quickly planned a movie expedition. How great it is that we can do things like that and that we have the support of the Berg and Harkavy funds to help make these events possible.
All the best,
