Carol Silver Elliott with Barb Reed, Cedar Village Board Member and Jewish Federation's Volunteer of the Year
May 27, 2011

Dear ,

We were delighted to recognize one of our board members as a Volunteer of the Year at the Jewish Federation's annual meeting on Wednesday evening.  Barb Reed is not only co-chairing the Cedar Village Golf Classic for the second year, she has been a vital part of the development of Cedar Village Hospice.  An experience hospice nurse, and a true believer in the hospice concept, Barb not only helped foster the idea for Cedar Village to open a hospice service, she has made referrals to us, helped identify potential staff members and even worked to develop the curriculum (and teach it!) for orienting hospice volunteers.  It was a joy to be able to celebrate this honor with Barb and it is one more way in which we can thank her for all she has done, and continues to do, for Cedar Village.

Other big news includes a new medical service coming to the Cedar Village campus.  As of June 3, we will add Cardiology to the list of clinics available to our residents.  We already offer dentistry; optometry; ophthalmology; audiology; dermatology; and podiatry.  Last year we were thrilled to add orthopedic surgery, which has been a huge boon to our residents.  Now, Dr. John Szawaluk of the Ohio Heart and Vascular Center, will join our team one day a month.  Dr. Szawaluk is board certified in Cardiology and specializes in non-invasive Cardiology services.

Cedar Village's Board of Trustees held its annual meeting this week as well.  It was a great time for us to recount the successes of the past year and to discuss future plans.  We offered tours of the new rehabilitation center and it is exciting to "show off" the progress.  The new inpatient and outpatient therapy suite is well on the way to completion and we look forward to a very early July ribbon cutting.  Work in the new resident rooms is also moving right along and we are excited to see the new areas taking shape.

On Thursday afternoon, another board has its very first meeting here. That is the board of Cedar Village Foundation, a brand new organization that held its inaugural meeting on May 26.  Cedar Village Foundation will house Cedar Village's endowment funds and become the focal point for all of our fundraising activities.  We believe that this new structure will give us an opportunity to grow our development effort, raising funds to support Cedar Village and its programs and services both today and in the future.  Stay tuned for more on this important new initiative!

All the best,
