A tornado warning this week provided us with some unexpected excitement-it's the kind of excitement we could do without! Still, it was a good opportunity to test our procedures and knowledge and, thankfully, it passed without incident. Did you ever wonder what we do at Cedar Village in the event of a tornado warning? We have different protocols for watch and warning. For watch, as you can imagine, we get ready. We close blinds, we turn off unnecessary equipment and the like. But on a warning, we take action. We move all of our residents into the halls, closing doors behind them. Whether in the apartments or Health Care, the key is away from the windows into areas that are as protected as possible. And that's what we did this week. Everyone was very cooperative and we moved folks out, and then back, without incident. In many areas our staff served snacks (ice cream cones too!) to make the time pass more quickly. We're grateful that there were no tornados in our immediate area and glad that we had a chance to make sure we all know what to do just in case.
Last week, you may recall, we shared the wonderful story of Marvin James and his return home after 2-1/2 years at Cedar Village. In case you missed it, here is the video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig3P5tljfco and here is a link to some of the other coverage that Cedar Village received: http://www.pulsejournal.com/news/local-news/surprise-party-limo-part-of-mans-weight-loss-celebration--988377.html. It is such a heartwarming story and a real example of an individual's determination and our staff's support, encouragement and skill. Check it out!
On Sunday, we had the annual brick dedication in the Friends of Cedar Village brick garden. It is always so moving to hear folks talk about why they placed a brick in the Chai Court and what it means to them. We also had baking with Martha, one of the new and wonderful activities made possible because we now have "Joyce's Kitchen," in the Oakview Apartments. We also had a great trip to the Taft Museum this week and residents loved the special quilt exhibit.
Here's a date to put on your calendars: On Tuesday, November 23, from 2-3 p.m., we will have speaker from State Attorney General Richard Cordray's office talking about "Senior Scams" and helping all of us to be educated on what to look for and when to be wary. It's a good way to help raise everyone's level of awareness. Please join us in the Wilbur and Mary Jean Cohen Religious and Cultural Center for this informative session.
All the best,
