Cedar Village E-News August 27, 2010 |
Dear ,
School is back in session, there are moments when the air is a little
more crisp than humid and we are preparing for the High Holidays--it
must be that fall is fast approaching! We've had a few questions about
the holidays so we thought this would be a good opportunity to provide
some clarifications and also, we hope, solicit some participation! As
to the clarification, many of you are aware that for the last couple of
years we have moved the Reform service from the Temple to the Garden
Dining Room on the first day of Rosh Hashonah and on Yom Kippur morning.
As you know, the Wilbur and Mary Jean Cohen Religious and Cultural
Center houses both our Temple and Synagogue and we divide the spaces by
use of folding walls. When the numbers of participants are very large,
on either side, we can expand the space by using different folding
walls. We do, however, reach a point where we have run out of capacity
and, when we have only a single wall separating the two spaces, there
are sometimes issues of sound migration, which can be disturbing and
distracting. This year, however, we have retooled a bit and are going
to try and keep all our services where they normally would be--in the
Temple and in the Synagogue. We've given some thought to reconfiguring
the arrangement of the chairs and re-directing the sound system and
we're going to give it a try. If it is not what we hope, we'll go back
to moving around but we hope that we've found a solution that will work
well and make things simpler for everyone.
Now, for the request--we have many opportunities available for
participation during the holiday services, especially in the Temple. We
would love your help! If you'd like to do a reading, help usher or
take part in any way, please let us know. We welcome your involvement
and we delight in sharing the holidays with you, your family and our
whole Cedar Village family. If you are interested, please contact Rabbi
Walter at either 754-3100 or gwalter@cedarvillage.org and he will put you in touch with our volunteer coordinator.
And, on one more holiday note, did you know that Cedar Village offers an
inter-generational service on both the first morning of Rosh Hashonah
and on Yom Kippur morning? Well, if you missed it last year, please
plan to join us this year. We begin at 9 a.m. in the Temple and it's a
service especially designed for the little ones. We love it when we see
three, and sometimes four, generations gather for songs, stories and
activities that introduce children to the holidays in a spirited and
engaging way. It's open to all so please bring your children and
grandchildren and stop by, we would love to see you!
Fall also brings with it the next semester of Opening Minds through Art
(OMA), which has been an incredibly successful program through our
partnership with the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University.
OMA is focused on individuals with dementia, allowing and encouraging
them to make choices, express themselves and experience art, regardless
of how advanced their disease. Watching OMA and the residents who take
part is truly like watching magic happen. We see people whose abilities
are severely limited by disease become engaged in these activities and
take control of the art they are creating. If you have not seen OMA in
action, you have missed something remarkable. The good news is--it's
not too late. OMA requires a lot of volunteer participation, in most
cases, one on one with a participant--not to do the project but to
support and interact. There are no skills required except a desire to be
a part of something remarkable and the willingness to spend some Friday
mornings at Cedar Village. All training is provided--we just need you
to volunteer. If you are interested, please contact Marcia Westcott at
either 754-3100 or mwestcott@cedarvillage.org. You will be glad you did!
All the best,
