Schools are opening and summer is winding down. That didn't stop us from taking another great summer outing this week! Staff and a group of residents from our Health Care Center took a ride to The Goody Shop in Mt. Healthy. Why there? Well, The Goody Shop is owned and operated by the mother of one of our wonderful staff and she really made it easy for us to visit. There were card tables set up just for us, making it easy to accommodate wheelchairs and everyone was focused on the residents having a great time. It was a perfect day, warm but not humid, sunny with a breeze and some of the residents remarked that they'd be quite happy to spend the whole afternoon in that spot! It was a lovely bus ride and, while it may not seem to most of them that this was a big excursion-let me tell you, it was great. To hear a resident who does not speak all that often describe the day as "Awesome!" is truly a Cedar Village moment.
While the Golf Classic is now a pleasant memory for 2010, we're starting to plan for our second
Battle of the Bands! We'd love to recruit some local amateur bands (the "garage band" variety) to round out our program. Are you a wannabe rock star? Do you still sing, play and harbor dreams of what your musical career could have been? We'd love to talk to you about being in our lineup and having your big moment in the spotlight. Please contact Sally Korkin at either 754-3100 or
skorkin@cedarvillage.org and let her know! We're planning for an early December event.
Did you know that we have a program calling FACTing in our kitchens every day? Well, we do. About 30 minutes before lunch and dinner, every single day, a team of staff including dietary management, administration and others taste every single item, in every version (including purees and mechanical soft) that we are going to serve. We evaluate the items on four different criteria: Flavor; Appearance; Consistency and Temperature (hence the word FACT). We use a five point scale and nothing below a 3 is served and anything with a 3 is addressed. Sometimes it means the Chef has to make quick changes, sometimes it means we pull an item from the menu. It's all about quality and enhancing satisfaction. The program has been such a hit here that Morrison Senior Dining Services, our food service provider, has instituted in other places.
High Holidays are fast approaching. We will have our usual full schedule of services in both the Temple and the Synagogue. We're always happy to have you join us and will share the times and locations in next week's enews. Any questions, feel free to contact Rabbi Walter, Director, Pastoral Care at either 754-3100 or
gwalter@cedarvillage.org.
