Cedar Village E-News July 23, 2010

Dear ,

From the Cincinnati Zoo to Mealtime Motion, it has been a great week at Cedar Village!  We had a wonderful visit with our friends from the Zoo this week.  They brought a porcupine, an owl and a snake and residents had a great time learning about the animals, seeing them close up and having a chance to ask questions.  We had such a great response that it is definitely going to be a program that continues.  In fact, we're having alpacas in August (outside of course!) and that should be fun for all as well!

I hope you're also wondering about Mealtime Motion.  That is a great new program that's been developed jointly by management and staff in our Resident Life, Nursing and Rehab departments.  Mealtime Motion is taking place on the units in the Health Care Center on a regular schedule.  It's a program of activities that are being done in the dining rooms, often just before meals are served. Because residents are gathered there, seated and waiting, we're using that time to advantage.  We have people exercising their arms, moving their feet and legs and often doing so in time to music.  It's a way to encourage some more gentle physical activity and helps maintain muscle strength and tone.  It's a creative new program we are very proud of, hope you are too!

Speaking of motion, don't forget about CedarFit.  That's a brand new initiative that will begin in the fall, with training to take place in August.  CedarFit is a wellness program that will be staffed largely with volunteers and focused on folks who have difficulty leaving their homes (whether at Cedar Village or in the community).  Volunteers will use a professionally developed program to help folks learn simple ways to improve their fitness.  For example, soup cans can make great weights and simple arm curls, even while sitting in a chair or watching television, holding a can in each hand, can improve fitness.  Other exercises will focus on gentle stretching and toning, all designed for an elderly population.  Think you'd like to be a part of this effort?  We'd love to have you.  Please contact Marcia Westcott at mwestcott@cedarvillage.org for more details.

Golf is coming!  Are you already registered for the 11th annual Cedar Village Golf Classic?  I hope so.  If not, there is still time but don't delay-the tournament is August 9th at the Wetherington Country Club in West Chester.  We always have a sensational event and this year will be no exception.

All the best,
