Dear ,
July began with our wonderful Harkavy Holiday weekend events. From our barbecue on Sunday to the antique car show and Buffalo Ridge Jazz Band on Monday, it was all great. The antique car show is a special favorite. We have quite a selection of cars, from a 1931 Model "A" to a 1970 El Camino and their owners generously spend the time to show off their cars, take our residents for rides and talk about their vintage automobiles. Such fun and a real highlight every year!
We also had our July Resident of the Month event on Wednesday evening and that is always a highlight. Members of the management staff interview a resident from each area and unit and they are presented with a special certificate. At the event, the staff person shares some of the resident's biography as well as words of wisdom. It is amazing how much we learn about these folks each month, regardless of how well we think we know them. Family and friends are invited to join us-and they do-making it a very warm and memorable evening.
On Wednesday afternoon, we had great fun with a program through Creative Aging. Healthy Rhythms. Using all kinds of rhythm instruments, residents did a variety of exercises, worked with music and even did some guided imagery. At the end of the session, the instructor asked each person to give a one word description of how they were feeling. Words included "relaxed, enthused and calm."
We also had the pleasure of having Teepa Snow here this week. Teepa is a nationally known educator and leader in dementia care and a regular visitor to Cedar Village. (Her home base is North Carolina but she travels all over the country.) Teepa not only worked with staff and residents, she started us on an exciting new path-training members of our staff to be Certified Dementia Care Specialists. We finished our classroom training for Level I, of four, and have six weeks of work to become skill certified and graduate the first level. We had 25 people take part and, once certified, they will begin to teach and share their learning with others. We think it will enhance our care and make Cedar Village even more of a leader in dementia care. Stay tuned for more details!
All the best,
Carol Silver Elliott
