Cedar Village E-News

June 11, 2010

Dear ,

Some weeks ago we mentioned that we are now programming by "community" in the Health Care Center at Cedar Village.  I thought this might be a good opportunity to tell you more about what we mean by that as well as let you know how it's working.

One of the things that we all know is that aging and the disease process are different for each individual.  We have tried to group residents on units based on their conditions and abilities, recognizing that many people are affected by dementia in varying degrees.  What we've found is that people's health status changes unpredictably and that moving residents to different units, attempting to create groups by level or diagnosis, is not always easy or effective.  It sounds like a good solution but, in practice, it is not a perfect one. Residents become comfortable in their rooms, which are their homes, and with the staff on a unit.  Changing that can be not only disruptive but also have a negative health impact.

As a result, we have made a decision that programming is not about "where you live" but rather which program group best meets your needs.  We've done a lot of training with our staff on dementia specifically and understanding the various levels of disease process.  As we work with residents, we find that grouping them more by level and less by "geography" in the building creates a much better experience.  We are not, when possible, moving folks from floor to floor-the transportation time is just too long-but we are grouping them differently, fluidly to recognize their changes, and programming for them in unique ways that meet their needs at this point in their life process.

Now in our third month of programming by community, I am happy to report that it is working beautifully.  Residents are receiving much more targeted activities, that meet them where they are rather than combining them with a larger, more diverse group in which they might be lost, disoriented or distressed.  It's a great innovation by our Resident Life team with wonderful support from Nursing and Therapy.  Great teamwork by a great team equals great results and we are very proud of that!

Our Comfort Care program is something else we are very excited about and that is moving along beautifully.  As I hope you know, Comfort Care is the forerunner of our hospice program, providing hospice level services, at no charge, within Cedar Village, as we prepare for full Medicare certification.  We are actively recruiting volunteers to be a part of the Comfort Care program.  Volunteers can play many different roles, from visiting with a resident and/or family or reading to a resident to knitting lap blankets or arranging flowers.  The opportunities are varied and there is truly something for everyone who would like to take part.  All volunteers must have a special orientation and these will be ongoing, we had our first last Sunday morning and the second will take place on Tuesday, June 15.  If you're interested, or would like more information on volunteering, please contact Marcia Westcott at mwestcott@cedarvillage.orgAnd, of course, if you have any questions about Comfort Care, feel free to call me at 754-3100 or email
carol@cedarvillage.org.
