Cedar Village E-News

June 4, 2010

Dear ,

Happy June!  Hope that it is the beginning of a great summer for you and your family.  We've kicked the month off with one of our favorite things, the celebration of Resident of the Month.  Seven residents, one from each of the units in Health Care (except the short term rehab unit) and our Oak View and Fountain View apartments were selected for June.  On Wednesday evening, they sat at the front of the Cohen Center, each with flowers to mark the occasion and all of them were beaming.  A member of the management staff's Resident of the Month team has interviewed each one and they shared their stories and words of wisdom for all to hear.  Each story is unique and we learn so much about these individuals and their history.  We also present each resident honored with a plaque that commemorates the event.  The evening's honorees invite family and friends and the room is filled with joy and pride.  And, of course, we wrap up the evening with some lovely desserts and lively conversation.

This weekend we will begin the training of our Comfort Care volunteers.  What is Comfort Care?  Cedar Village is moving towards creating hospice care within the walls of our Health Care Center.  We believe that providing enhanced palliative (pain control) and end of life services will enhance the quality and continuity of care available to our residents.  To become certified as a hospice, we must apply (which we have done) for Medicare certification and review, which takes about a year.  However, when Medicare comes out to review, we must have already had cases . . . it's a little bit complicated, I know.  What it means is that we must provide hospice level services prior to certification.  The only difference between before and after certification is that Cedar Village will not be reimbursed for providing care for those initial cases.  Fortunately, we've received a bequest, from the estate of Louis and Dorothea Ginberg, that has allowed us to begin our program.  We're calling it Comfort Care and we have hired an experienced hospice nurse to run it, as well as an aide specifically for that program.  We've also added social worker and chaplaincy services to the team.  Comfort Care is available for any resident of Cedar Village's Health Care Center and it includes not only care of the resident, but also services for the family including, when appropriate, year-long bereavement services.

We currently have seven Comfort Care active cases and are very enthused about the program and its' role at Cedar Village.  One thing that we have learned in this process is that volunteer involvement is not only important, it is critical.  Medicare requires that every hospice have volunteer hours that are equivalent to 5% of overall staffing hours.  The role of the volunteer is as varied as the interests of that volunteer. A volunteer could certainly sit with a hospice patient or family member, which is the vision many of us have when we thinking about volunteering for hospice.  But a volunteer could also knit lap blankets at home or arrange flowers or bring a cart of snacks to family members.  The options are nearly endless.  If you have an interest in helping with this new program, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with Marcia Westcott at mwestcott@cedarvillage.org if you'd like to volunteer.  It's not too late to be a part of this weekend's orientation and there is another one scheduled for June 15.  If you have any questions about Comfort Care, or our direction with hospice, please feel free to contact me either at 754-3100 or carol@cedarvillage.org.All the best,
