 13thanniversary

Dear ,

We celebrated Cedar Village's 13th birthday this week.  And, as with all Cedar Village events, it was very special and a lot of fun!  Because it is our "B'nai Mitzvah year," we thought it would be fun to do a candle lighting ceremony, much like the one done at many Bar and Bat Mitzvah parties.  We had thirteen candles, a clever poem for each of our candle lighters (written by our very own Sally Korkin), and a lovely afternoon celebration.  Our candles were lit by two residents of our Health Care Center; residents of our Fountain View and Oak View apartments; board members; family members; members of the Friends of Cedar Village; staff who have been here since Cedar Village opened; and our management team.  It was really lovely and after the program we all shared birthday treats, including cupcakes with "CV 13" on them!

On Wednesday afternoon, we had another great event that might even become a Cedar Village tradition!  We had a "Tea and Charoset" party in the Garden Dining Room.  We thought it would be fun to sample some of the different types of charoset that stem from different traditions and backgrounds.  Our chef made the traditional Ashkenazi apple nut charoset, which is familiar to most of us.  He also made a Persian version that had dates, pistachios, bananas, almonds, raisins and more.  The third type was the "Seven Fruits of Surinam" and had coconut, prunes, pears, apricots, cherry jam and more.  All of our recipes were culled from Joan Nathan's Jewish Holiday cookbook.  We shared some interesting "charoset history and facts" and then residents told us about the recipes they used.  Then, of course, we tasted. Each table had small cups, labeled 1, 2 and 3 and we used Tam Tam crackers as our "tasting medium."  We served different types of tea and also a wonderful flourless chocolate torte made by the dining services folks.   Finally, we voted by show of hands.  Surprisingly, all three different types received about equal votes (most of us had speculated that the more traditional one would win but it was not the case!) and we all agreed that it had been fun!

Speaking of Passover, on Monday we will be having some fun with matzo! Rabbi Walter will lead a "matzo making" demonstration and then we'll be working with residents to make chocolate matzo crunch.  It should be a great event-and delicious too!  If you don't have your reservations in for our community Passover Seder, don't wait!  Forms are available at the reception desk in the lobby and from all members of our Resident Life staff.

Don't forget that 8 over 80 is coming up soon!  You should have received your invitation in the mail.  If not, please call Sally Korkin at 754-3100 or email skorkin@cedarvillage.org and one will be on its way to you immediately.  We will be honoring eight very special people:  Wilbur Cohen; Dave Jacobson; Bob Kanter; Florence Lieberman; Lou Nidich; Sue Ransohoff; Dick Weiland and Florence Zaret.  We'll gather at Adath Israel on May 2nd at 6 p.m. for a night to remember.  Hope you will be there!

All the best,
