Dear ,
We braved the cold this week to take residents to "A Musical Legacy" concert at Plum Street Temple, sponsored by the Center for Holocaust and Humanities. We are so blessed at Cedar Village to be able to provide these opportunities to our residents. Our Berg and Harkavy funds make so many worthwhile programs possible-both bringing top notch entertainment in and taking residents out to community events. We are working on our program calendar for this year and our residents will have the opportunity to attend many great things, from the symphony to theatre at the Aronoff. All of these events are offered at no charge to the resident, thanks to the generous benefactors who created the Harkavy and Berg funds. Being able to offer this level of programming truly enhances life for our residents and helps to make Cedar Village such a special place. Our next semester of OMA (Opening Minds through Art) will begin in just two weeks. OMA is a program through our partnership with the Scripps Gerontology Center of Miami University. It employs the principles of adult education and gerontology and uses art as a tool. Through OMA, individuals with dementia, including very advanced dementia, can make choices, exercise some control in their lives and express themselves in a creative process. Truly, words cannot describe how OMA works-you have to see it in action. The OMA model uses volunteers in a one-to-one relationship with residents and what transpires, for both parties, is nothing short of magical. If you think you could find two hours on Friday morning to spend at Cedar Village, being an OMA volunteer would be well worth your time. Training will take place Thursday February 4 from 9:30-11:30 so you still have time to sign up. Interested? Want more information? Please contact Marcia Westcott at mwestcott@cedarvillage.org. You will be glad you did! If OMA is not for you, or your schedule does not allow a Friday morning commitment, Marcia would also be delighted to tell you about the other volunteer opportunities available. In fact, if you have an interest or skill, we can work with you and design a volunteer role that you would enjoy. Spending time with our residents is, as I always say, a blessing every day. There are lots of those blessings to go around-come in and find out! We are hard at work at lots of plans for the future. In the weeks ahead we will be sharing many of them with you! You may also be contacted by Spectrum Marketing on our behalf. They are doing some research for us on what other services are desired/needed by our community so that we can have real information on which to base our planning. Hope you will take part if asked!
All the best,
Carol Silver Elliott
