Dear

We are generating a lot of attention in our Art Gallery today.  Why? Because the first session's display of OMA (Opening Minds through Art) is being taken down and will be replaced by art from the fall, our second session.  OMA is a remarkable program, made possible through our partnership with the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University.  OMA uses principles of adult learning, gerontology and art to help individuals with dementia find ways to express themselves.  The program is not about art, truly, it is about the ability to choose and participate, to enable self expression even in those whose communication and cognitive skills have been impaired by disease process.  The products from OMA, the art itself, are spectacular and the show includes photos of the artists at work and comments from both artists and volunteers.  The official opening of the new show is January 21 but don't miss the chance to take a peek if you are in the neighborhood!

Speaking of OMA, did you know that we still have volunteer spots available?  No artistic ability is required, just a willingness to spend a couple of hours, one on one, with a resident.  It is truly a great program to be involved with, and we are taking it beyond just one unit into more of our Health Care Center.  If you're at all interested, please check it out. Training will begin soon-and I can promise that it will be a volunteer experience you will long treasure.  For more information, you may contact Marcia Westcott, Director of Resident Programming and Volunteers at either 754-3100 or mwestcott@cedarvillage.org.

Here's a great Cedar Village moment to share with all of you-we have a resident who came to us after a complicated and challenging life in the community.  At first, he really did not participate or communicate.  He rarely walked, opting to rely on a wheelchair.  He was identified as someone who might take part in the B'nai Mitzvah Mission.  That opportunity mobilized him to walk more and become more proactive about his health.  Being in Israel helped revitalize his sense of purpose and he began to communicate much more openly.  Today, he is not only an active Cedar Village volunteer (and resident) but also leads activities for other residents.  He is truly an example of what we always say, "Life begins at Cedar Village."

All the best,
