Dear  ,

If you have not been to Cedar Village on Mitzvah Day (otherwise known as December 25!) you are missing something very special-and lots of fun!  Every year, we have more than 125 volunteers who come to Cedar Village and make this day a memorable one for our residents and help us to allow non-essential staff to spend the day with their families.

The Friends of Cedar Village Mitzvah Day began years ago as "switch day" in an era when health care regulations were not as stringent!  In those days, I have been told, volunteers did everything from assist with resident care to cook meals in the kitchen.  It must have been amazing!  Today, both regulations and the complexity of care and services limit the roles of the volunteers but they are still vital.  Volunteers from Rockdale Temple conduct an annual pancake breakfast. Other volunteers fill in as wait staff in the Garden Dining Room.  We have volunteers providing transportation in the building, delivering mail and even assisting with vacuuming!  The residents love all the visitors and the volunteers have a chance to both do some good and have fun.  What could be better than that?

We hope that you were a part of the Friends of Cedar Village Mitzvah Day 2009 and, if not, you will plan on it for the future.  We love to open our doors to the community and to show you first hand why we mean it when we say "Life begins at Cedar Village."

All the best,

Life Begins at Cedar Village Music Video

In recent months, all of us have had many conversations about health care reform, funding cuts and other concerns that will impact the elderly.  We constantly work to make our case with our legislators, community and others that our seniors do matter, that we cannot shortchange them in an effort to reform the system.

Talking about ways to continually reinforce this message, we decided to do something unusual to make our point.  We decided to make a music video to show just how active our residents are and how committed our staff all are to making their lives full and rich.  Our dear friend, Marc "The Marvelous Toy" Rossio, who performs here often, was kind enough to allow us to use his song "L'Chaim to Life" and one of our talented staff wrote "custom" verses for Cedar Village.  Both staff and residents loved both the experience and the finished product.  We hope that you do too!  It is just one more tool for us to use to talk about who we are, who we serve and remind folks that our elders matter.

Smile and please share this!
