Dear ,
Happy Chanukah to one and all! May this season of light bring light into your lives and warmth into all of your hearts. Our Chanukah celebration at Cedar Village begins today with a concert of the combined choir and bell choir. It is an incredible experience to hear and see our bell choir and, combining them with the choir, will make it magical. It is a perfect way to begin our holiday together. Throughout the course of the holiday we will have community rabbis lighting candles with the residents daily and it is a wonderful way to bring us even closer to the Cincinnati Jewish community. And, of course, our big Chanukah party is Sunday, December 13 beginning at 2 p.m. If you love klezmer music, this is a party for you! Please join us if you are able, it will be fun for all.
We have had a very special week here. Some of the highlights included a field trip to the Mariemont Theatre. We rented an entire theatre to have a private showing of "Yoo Hoo Mrs. Goldberg," a documentary about Gertrude Berg. For some of us, it was a great learning experience and for the residents, it was filled with memories and nostalgia. We had 25 residents brave the cold and wind and all of them felt it was well worth it. They shared stories of listening to Gertrude Berg on the radio and later watching on television. They talked about their memories of the McCarthy era and the impact of "Red Channels" on the entertainment industry. And they recalled their own experiences with mothers calling across the air shafts and out of apartment building windows, creating a very different sense of community than the one we know now. This wonderful event was made possible by the Berg Family Fund.
On Thursday evening, we hosted Heather Lauren Klein, an extremely talented and delighted young vocalist. Heather is Conservatory trained with a masters in music and currently auditioning with opera companies. She developed an interest in Yiddish music several years ago and has a repertoire of wonderful Yiddish songs that she performed beautifully. We had a full house in the Wilbur and Mary Jean Cohen Religious and Cultural Center and no one wanted to see the evening end!
We wish you and your family the healthiest and happiest of holiday season.
All the best,
Carol Silver Elliott
