New Report Looks at How to Treat the Next Pandemic The hospital took a good, long, hard look at how it handled last year's H1N1 pandemic. Amid generally positive findings, the new report suggested some lab and decision-making tweaks, and cautioned that there could be a national mask shortage next time around. Sidebar: A look back at the challenges of the 2009 outbreak. |
RNs Enjoy the Hospital and Their Jobs but See Chances for Change At least 94 percent of UCH's 1,300 nurses took the annual RN Survey this year. Their ratings of UCH exceed national averages for both other academic and other Magnet hospitals, but the survey revealed opportunities for improvement. |

| School of Medicine's Ed Melanson, PhD, demonstrates sensors used in the "room calorimeter," housed on the 12th floor of the AIP. |

It's a Room. It Counts Calories. It's a Room Calorimeter! Up in the far reaches of the AIP is a strange room where some pretty interesting sports medicine research is unfolding thanks to a simple, ingenious way of measuring precisely how much energy a subject is using. "I love this system," says one of the many adopters, who come from all over the state. |
"An Incredible Will to Self-Preservation" For the past two months, UCH has brought together people who have at least two things in common: essentially mechanical hearts and the need to talk about how to live with them. |
Melanoma Clinic RN's Indispensable Care Cindy Braden, RN (above), earned the President's Award for World Class Care for a decade of unflagging attention to the needs of patients and to operational detail. |

Federal funds come to I-225 sooner than expected The City of Aurora got the last $16.2 million of the $46.5 million needed to finish modernizing the interchange at Colfax and creating a new campus entrance at 17th Avenue Place. The payoff: better campus traffic flow. Target date: the end of 2012.

So long, Styrofoam: UCH to go to "green" cups What started as an email to Bruce Schroffel is ending later this month with a hospital-wide switch to corn-based, compostable cups and lids for both hot and cold beverages in the hospital's cafeterias and inpatient units. Several departments are sharing the slightly higher cost. The initiative will also reduce the number of cup sizes dramatically.

It's not easy being easy Epic's approach has given client system manager Eric Harris (left) a chance to concoct ways to make the desktop "user experience," well, easier. Coming soon with Epic, to a monitor near you: logging in with a badge swipe; getting into Citrix faster, quicker Web access from the ambulatory clinics, more.

Fighting cancer a group effort The Cancer Center and its Clinical Investigations Core are part of a national, cooperative effort aimed at confronting the many faces of the disease.

Plugging clots UCH is about to join a clinical trial for a tiny "cardiac plug" (left) that shows promise for blocking blood clots from forming in atrial fibrillation patients.

Recalling active times could help elderly patients A growing number of older patients experience delirium in hospitals. A pilot program at UCH hints that memories of happier days often improve mood and reduce their disorientation, and bring them closer to "optimal care." It's also a big hit with volunteers.

"Overwhelming in their welcome" Nurses from one of the oldest, most storied hospitals in the world swung by UCH to learn about how nurses round, apply evidence-based care, control MRSA infections and, not least, how they earned three straight Magnet designations. Above: London-based nurses with UCH Magnet Program Director Danielle Schloffman (far right) during hospital visit.
