SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
(SAAM)
The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States; beginning as a week observed in the month April by the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCASA) in the 1980s. This week later developed into advocates and survivors of assault coordinating activities and events throughout the entire month; which advanced the idea of a nationally recognized month for sexual violence awareness and prevention activities. SAAM was first observed nationally in April 2001, but it wasn't until 2009 that President Obama was the first United States president to proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. Each year during the month of April, state, territory, and community-based organizations, rape crisis centers, government agencies, businesses, campuses, and individuals plan events and activities to highlight sexual violence as a public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts.
Everyone has a role in stopping sexual assault and localizing SAAM activities is a great way to extend this message. By working together and pooling our resources during the month of April, we can highlight sexual violence as a major issue.
