Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from a Day of Unity observed in October, 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The day's intent was to connect battered women's advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. Later in 1989, the Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress and the month of October was nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
An estimated 3 million women report incidents of domestic violence each year in the United States alone. One in three people may suffer from abuse and violence in their lifetime, yet domestic violence is often under recognized and under reported. However, organizations and individuals still have the power to take charge against this issue. TurnAround, Inc. presents the Purple Poetry Book Release Party; a compilation of poems, short stories, and artwork on the topics of intimate partner and sexual violence, relationships, and body image composed to create awareness to End Abuse Everywhere!
