RECOMMENDED This Weekend

Carmageddon? - stay out of the car or ride Metro. Here are just a few particularly interesting things to do this weekend near you or easy to get to via the Metro...

NEWS YOU CAN USE: No more paper tickets. Metro has implemented the new Tap system - the ticketing has changed but it's actually quite easy to use. You will need to buy a Tap card as a part of your transaction ( if you have not already done so). You can then either load it with a specific fare or just load it with some money. When you tap the card at the turnstile, the appropriate fare will be deducted from this reusable plastic ticket.

Astra Dance: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari at the El Portal in NoHo

Caligari

For those who enjoy a little Edwardian in their everyday or Steampunk on their Saturdays, Astra Dance Company's adaptation of the classic silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a visually stunning production, even if the music is too sleepy and repetitive. Blending acrobatics with contemporary movement, the use of video screen projections retains the cinematic feel while dancers, stilt-walkers and contortionists do their own dark magic onstage. The story is moody, if a bit threadbare, but in keeping with the romanticism of the age. With only a week more to go, this is worth a go-see especially for those who enjoy highbrow Halloween-style offerings.

Runs through October 7

El Portal Theatre
5269 Lankershim Blvd.
North Hollywood, CA  91601

"Three Views of the Same Object" is a Tour de Force by M.R. Hunter

Three Views play

The question this anxiety poses is tackled by playwright Henry Murray in a Greek structure that presents three stories with two main characters grappling with a mortal decision in three startling and devastating conclusions. Inspired by an elderly couple Murray observed years ago struggling to get their mail, the subject of aging in America and the stoic suffering it can bring is handled with profound care, reverence and without a whiff of patronizing sentimentality. This isn't your grandmother's doily laden puff piece about getting on in years gracefully. It is raw, vicious and multidimensional in its versatile form. Murray hits this one out of the ballpark.

STOVALL'S SPACE AGE INN OF TOMORROW, ANAHEIM, 1972

by Charles Phoenix

How much are we all loving those astro pińatas orbiting alongside that inner galactic galaxy of hanging lamps? They mix and mingle so well with that big blue futuristic video game, early automotive kit craft wall art and pea green armadillo sniffing the beautiful blue green shag carpet. Those blue and green hoops and bubbles glued on the bannister and front desk don't disappoint either.

When it comes to tomorrow, more is more....

Summer is officially over and Halloween is right around the corner. We'll have a tremendous amount of energy due to the upcoming cooler temperatures. The start of October may see tempers flaring. Take whatever comes in stride. Most signs will be extremely busy and productive. This is an excellent time to push final projects up and out. There's an ideal window of opportunity for gains and lucky breaks until November, so maximize this Saturn and Uranus square. Then we can all relax just in time for the holidays. Stay the course and keep striving.
