SUMMER IS HERE!

 HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEKEND:

LAST REMAINING SEATSIt's June and it's time for the LA Conservancy's Last Remaining Seats - classic films presented in the wonderfully restored classic movie palaces downtown.  If there are any remaining seats, you may want to snap them up NOW! They always sell out and the experience is totally fantastic.

RAY BRADBURY -- 1920-2012: A WRITER OF THE STARS & THE STAGE

 by M.R. Hunter

In a recently published interview by The New York Times, John Irving claims, "It's better to read a good writer than meet one." While in some respects this observation might be justified, I'm grateful that I don't share Irving's cynical view, having had the privilege of meeting and interviewing some of my favorite writers and playwrights, among them Richard Matheson, Arthur Miller and my brief encounter with Ray Bradbury at the 2009 restaging of "Falling Upward" at the El Centro Theatre.

A minor mix-up at the box office left me and my friend possibly without seats on opening night. The ushers ran around feverishly to find a place for both of us, but the theater was sold out. We stood waiting at the top of the stairs when one of the ushers waved us down...and kept waving...until I realized as we approached the very first aisle, Mr. Ray Bradbury himself, seated but hardly contained by his genuine excitement...

THE CLOSENESS OF THE HORIZON

By Samuel Bernstein

Close Horizon Recalling Jason Miller's 1972 play, That Championship Season, Richard Martin Hirsch'sThe Closeness of the Horizon, now at the Odyssey Theatre, is a study in regret. A 1969 road trip is juxtaposed with later events in the lives of the three men who took that trip, and the road not taken looms large in their consciousness-along with a whole bunch of metaphorical and literal comparisons to the first moon landing.

There is a touch of a romantic triangle involved, lots of envy, a few major misunderstandings, some repressed rage, and literal as well as figurative paralysis.

LISTEN CLOSELY TO POET MURRAY MEDNICK AND PADUA PLAYWRIGHTS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR GUY ZIMMERMAN

By M.R. Hunter

MednickThere's one demand pioneering poet-playwright, Murray Mednick makes on his audiences: you have to listen. And enjoy poetry. On these, there is no compromise.

Zimmerman, a New York based playwright came out to Los Angeles to write for television but found himself attracted to the challenging but highly satisfying philosophy of Padua Playwrights and Mednick's own process. The pair relates to one another like a weathered married couple, finishing each other's sentences...

FANTASTIC!: "GARY'S NIGHTMARISH AUDITION &

THE FOOL AND THE RED QUEEN"

By M.R. Hunter

Red Queen

Its one thing to appreciate Murray Mednick's form, but quite an altogether different experience when you see his poetic structure onstage. Both plays, "Gary's Nightmarish Audition" and the "The Fool and the Red Queen" relate to one another in such subtle but powerfully intrinsic ways that one can view these as a conversation between shifting realities and the artistic process...
