Red Carpet Weekend: Carnaval, Spelling Bee and the Oscars

Oscar Gold

Oscar takes over Hollywood and the whole world watches on Sunday. In the meantime there is a lot to do sans Hollywood hype. But you may want to avoid the area around Hollywood and Highland, unless you're taking the Metro Red Line. Right now, while all is being prepped for the big night, you can walk the red carpet (covered with plastic) and Oscar will greet you at the top.

FRIDAY:
Prep and see the 2011 Oscar-nominated shorts at the Egyptian.

SATURDAY forget about it:

  • Go on a nature walk and see some of the Earliest Wildflowers in Newhall.
  • How gouda spella r u? Preschool to oldschool test your skill at the Spelling Bee for all ages in Carson.
  • Eat Your ART Out at LA's Underground Art Auction - food trucks, beer, carnival games too - benefits the Angel City Derby Girls. Oh yeah.
  • So you are a film buff... reelee? Take A Trip To The Moon (1902 - 110th anniversary edition) and then go on the Extraordinary Voyage (2011) that made it possible to see today.
  • Shake it up at the Brazilian Carnaval Exotica at Club Nokia. Samba, Samba, Samba the night away in all the colorful exotic excess of this popular annual party...
After all that you'll be ready for the sofa on Sunday.

The Eye Spy LA FILM page is always a great place to find film experiences that are beyond the blockbuster cineplex and often include after discussions with film makers.

There's more of course.  See all of this week's Editors Picks or view the full Eye Spy LA Calendar

TIP: you can find events and other things to do near you - you'll find neighborhood and regional calendar links at the bottom of all Eye Spy LA web pages.

By MR Hunter

Edwardian BallThe Absinthe flowing was a rare treat;
Its tonic strong, its flavor bitterly sweet.

The Belasco is an exquisite venue
For an Edwardian Ball and bizarre retinue.

The Corsets were nothing short of fantastic
And made gentlemen more than enthusiastic.

The Dancing included waltzes on every floor
As well as Jitterbugging and Flappers and more.

The Edwardian theme was glamour and glitz
Dark in its tone, a sort of macabre blitz...

DOMINGO'S GRAND FINALE: VERDI'S SIMON BOCCANEGRA
By  Mark Share

Placido Domingo The legendary tenor and the General Director of the LA Opera, Plcido Domingo, is 71 years old. He has long planned a dignified conclusion to his extraordinary singing career, which is the title character in Verdi's medieval political opera, Simon Boccanegra. It's a brilliant choice, because the character, excluding the prologue, is not an ardent lover, but rather a father, with a big death scene from slow-acting poison, and the part has no traditional arias, instead being written with orations and arguments delivered in a comfortable baritone.

In fact, ease and confidence pervades Domingo's masterful physical and vocal performance, and his ascendance from privateer to Doge of Genoa, and then reconciliation with his estranged daughter and political nemesis make perfect theatrical sense. Domingo has played this part around the world over the past few years and now brings it to his home company; it is a triumphant return...
