The annual lobster invasion begins, tall ships arrive, it's Brazilian Day in L.A. and Sunday marks the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. I hope you rested up on Labor Day... 

 

THINGS TO DO this weekend: 

9/11 TEN YEARS THIS September SUNDAY: The L.A. County Fair will be offering $1 admission this weekend for heroes and a Tunnel to Towers 5k run to benefit USA Cares and other organizations. Big Sunday is hosting a regional community service event to memorialize the anniversary. There is also an interfaith Choral Concert in Tarzana and a performance of the 9/11 Ten Minute Playwriting finalists in Hollywood.

A HOT NIGHT AT A COOL EVENT IN CHINATOWN

Eye Spy LA spent a colorful, fun and entertaining summer night in Chinatown a couple of weeks ago. My egg salad sandwich bad luck ended when my friend, Wasima, introduced me to the Open Faced Egg Salad Sandwich at Euro Pane Bakery. Oh my. At first sight, my eyes grew big. It was certainly a generous serving. In fact, it was a mountain of egg salad with arugula on a tomato pesto slathered rosemary currant bread. This egg salad sandwich seriously needed a knife and fork because there was no way I was going to try to eat that with my hands...

RHYTHM & ROOTS

 

Rhythm & Roots brought together a spectacular array of headlining singers like Macy Gray, Abraham McDonald, MC Lyte and Israeli pop icon Harel Skaat onstage. Accompanied by world-renowned dance companies Israeli-American Keshet Chaim's Dance Ensemble and the Lula Washington Dance Theatre, the Agape International Choir Ensemble opened and closed the show in an uplifting refrain of peace and unity, bringing the audience to its feet at the finale with Michael Jackson's "Heal the World."

I parted the blinds with my thumb and forefinger for another look at the man in the trench coat down below. Dimly lit by the dingy street lamp, face hidden by a fedora pulled low over his eyes, he still appeared to be eating something off the small plate he held in his two gloved hands. Then I noticed the others. They were all eating off small plates and some had a drink in their hand too. My interest was piqued. I had to find out what was going on...
