Hot Nights in Cool Places

Chinatown

Summer Night in Chinatown - Saturday night KCRW DJs will turn Chinatown Plaza into a dance party. Get a taste of Chinatown with cooking demonstrations from local chefs, dine in the area's restaurants or chow down at a selection of gourmet food trucks. Go Metro to the Gold Line Chinatown station.

THIS WEEK it's all about more warm evenings out all week long: festivals, concerts, movies...

Angels Flight interior This is the last weekend for Grand Performances - take a ride on Angel's Flight for A Night at the Phillip's Music Store, Chicano Batman, and From Roots to Fruits this weekend.

MUSIC EVERYWHERE: You'll find plenty of music and other outdoor entertainment opportunities (much of it free) this and every week through the summer, like at the Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena, Jazz at LACMA, the Culver City Musical Festival and more. See the Outdoor Entertainment Guide.

PLAN AHEAD: Believe it or not, Labor Day is NEXT weekend - L.A. County Fair, The Taste (9 events on 4 days in Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Downtown) and many more things to do on that holiday weekend.  See the September Calendar

There's more of course

TASTY TASTE TASTING by Andrea Kirk

Tasty Tastes

When opportunity knocks, open the door! One way to explore L.A., or anywhere for that matter, is one bite at a time. We all need to eat and any opportunity to try something different can be quite an eye opener. I bring this up because Eye Spy LA has had a couple of tasty taste experiences recently and there are a few notable opportunities along these lines coming up.

"VIVIEN" BROUGHT TO LIFE BY JUDITH CHAPMAN @ THE ROGUE MACHINE by M.R. Hunter

VIVIAN

Vivien Leigh's personal and professional life seems writ by the likes of Shakespeare. Ironic then, that this celebrated beauty was obsessed with playing one of the Bard's tragic heroines...

Her desire to be taken seriously as an actress after playing the memorable role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind and later, Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire continued to haunt her, mar her and fray at her nerves in Judith Chapman's steely, spit-fire but vulnerable depiction. Brazen, bold and bordering on a mental breakdown aided by her jealous second husband, Laurence Olivier, Chapman captures the fierceness and insecurity Rick Foster keenly weaves in a breathless 90 minutes that spans a troubled lifetime, a glamorous career and a heart wrenching demise of a woman who can do anything but strike, "a delicate balance."
