FOOD & MUSIC in L.A.

San Pedro

Taste San Pedro on the waterfront this weekend

MUSIC EVERYWHERE: You'll find plenty of music and other outdoor entertainment opportunities (much of it free) this and every week through the summer, like at the Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena, Jazz at LACMA, the Culver City Musical Festival and more. See the Outdoor Entertainment Guide or scroll below for stories about a couple of places we've been recently.

THIS WEEKEND:

  • The Ventura County Fair on the beach is no doubt the coolest county fair - now through mid August. The Orange County Fair continues also.
  • Get a Taste in San Pedro of local food, music and art along the waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles Friday through Sunday.
  • Grill for Glory at the 3rd Annual Korean BBQ Cook-off on Saturday.
  • Plan on a full day of folk music at an historic junkyard in Altadena on Saturday at the 2nd Annual New Los Angeles Folk Festival.
  • Head to Olvera Street and La Plaza for a parade and festival to celebrate Ecuadorian independence and learn about Ecuadorian culture.

STYLISTA ALERT: A Noise Within is moving and having a big garage sale this Saturday.  So if you've ever wanted to decorate your digs with theatrical props or perhaps you'd like to augment your out-on-the-town wardrobe with some unique items -  here's your chance.

TIP: you can find events and other things to do near you - you'll find neighborhood and regional calendar links at the bottom of all Eye Spy LA web pages.

There's more of course

GRAND PERFORMANCES IN A GRAND SETTING

GRAND PERFORMANCES

A grand reason to visit Downtown Los Angeles in the summer is to take in a Grand Performance at California Plaza. Presenting multiple free performances each week all summer long, Grand Performances are as diverse and eclectic as our city. And there is plenty to do and see nearby, making this a great staycation destination or a brilliant place to take out of town visitors...

There will be minor difficulties that could spoil your mood if you fret over them. Although these irritants could cause some delays, take heart that any trivial issues will quickly clear up. Travel is indicated but be frugal and try to seek out the best deal for your buck. Financially, you're going strong but consider curtailing your tendency to indulge in little extravagances. You could use some R & R after the last whirlwind six months. Get away with a small group of friends or family.

BOWLING FOR HAWAIIAN BREAKFAST by Abby Abanes

HAWAIIAN BREAKFAST

Of all the places you think you'd find a restaurant where you can order a Hawaiian breakfast, I bet that a bowling alley wouldn't even cross your mind. Yet, there truly is such a place because inside the walls of Gardena Bowl is the Gardena Bowl Coffee Shop, where the menu consists of regular American fare right next to both Japanese and Hawaiian specialties...

WOMEN IN THE KITCHEN, SOMEWHERE, 1957 by Charles Phoenix

CHARLES PHOENIX

The power of this spellbinding lemon-lime paint combo is enhanced by the odd place where one color leaves off and the other begins. Not to mention how the colors scream against that classic black-bordered white tile countertop and scalloped oilcloth curtains, while the strawberry shelf trim on the door-less, well-stocked cabinet blends right in...
