HOT & SPICY FESTIVALS THIS WEEKEND
Cool off this weekend along the coast at two annual summer festivals - both in their 18th year. They must be doing something right! Visit Oxnard (in the southern portion of Ventura County) for the 18th Annual Salsa Festival where you'll eat, drink and dance everything salsa.
Another favorite is the 18th Annual Crawfish Festival in Long Beach. Mountains of crawfish and plenty of spicy Cajun and Zydeco music to dance to.
Free outdoor concerts at Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena and other places too - all summer long.
NATIONAL DANCE DAY SATURDAY celebrate at these free events

TIP: you can find events and other things to do near you - you'll find neighborhood and regional calendar links at the bottom of all Eye Spy LA web pages.

"MUSIC IN THE L.A. ZOO" - CLASSIC ROCK NIGHT
by Mark Share
and other summer events at the zoo.
The LA Zoo can seem like the zoo without animals since they tend to hide out during the heat of the day and the zoo closes at 5:00 p.m. before they re-emerge in the cool of the evening. The hills and sun are brutal on visitors too. So when there is an evening event, well that's the time to go - particularly when there's entertainment and food...

LOADED FRIES - TASTING WITH FRYSMITH FOOD TRUCK
by Abby Abanes
Last month, I set up a tasting with the Frysmith Food Truck for my dining group and we got to sample 6 items from their menu. Frysmith is the brain child of Eric Cho, a native Angeleno who having exposed his palate to the diverse ethnic dining scene, used to dream up of how those flavors could be translated as french fry toppings; hence, the birth of Frysmith...

WORD UP: "THE WORD BEGINS" @ THE ROGUE MACHINE by M.R. Hunter
Steve Connell and Sekou Andrews fearlessly unleash their own powerful brand of humanism through an acerbic frenzy of riveting spoken word, hip-hop and philosophical musings. Between them, language is their only weapon as they tackle monumental issues with the deadly accuracy of David against Goliath. Spiritual, complex, urban and urbane, their words ricochet against the graffiti-painted walls, hitting their mark and hitting home "what must be spoken/must be heard."
And the people are listening. Originally produced at the Signature Theatre and later developed at the Ojai Playwrights Festival, "The Word Begins" also appeared most recently at the LA Radar Festival to critical acclaim. Now at the Rogue Machine in partnership with the Hip-Hop Theater Festival, a new crop of listeners are hanging onto their every word... |
