MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND - GOT PLANS?
Arlington West Santa Monica sets up a temporary memorial next to the Santa Monica Pier every Sunday. This is a good place to go to ponder peace and pay respects to all of our brave brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and friends who have lost their lives in war.

FESTIVE THINGS TO DO WITH THAT EXTRA TIME OFF:
There are more editor's picks this week, in fact, too many to mention. Find them all here with the details.
PLAN AHEAD:Take a peek at what's coming in JUNE.
I went to the sold out opening screening of this year's Last Remaining Seats series. What a treat to see "Rear Window" on the big screen at the opulent Orpheum Theatre. The film was introduced by Leonard Maltin who dished up many tasty tidbits of information about Alfred Hitchcock and the stellar cast. There are still some tickets remaining for this year's Last Remaining Seats screenings in June. Charles Phoenix hosts next Wednesday's screening of "The Music Man," how perfect is that. Get tickets while you can.

FUTURE STARS: CHAMPS SENIOR PRODUCTION OF "BECOMING MEMORIES" - A THRILL TO WATCH by M.R. Hunter
Actors get their first start somewhere. Usually, it's not in front of a critic. By the time a reviewer sees them, they are already seasoned professionals with a stockpile of credits to their name.
It's a rare treat then, to watch a new crop of budding actors from CHAMPS Charter High School perform in their senior production of "Becoming Memories" at the Avery Schreiber Theater in North Hollywood. Glee fans take note, because the real thing isn't on TV, (although these students will no doubt have careers in film and television), it's in our own community, thriving in spite of a push to end charter school funding and limit the number of schools here in California...

THE LAWN MOWER, SOMEWHERE, USA, 1955
by Charles Phoenix
The shadow of afternoon light is long on grassy greens, newbie trees and American cars posed in dream home driveways. A happy, lawn mowing lady is freshly permed and well-dressed for the occasion in sporty stripes and snappy, strappy shoes. Her deluxe lawn mower is beautifully finished in a delicious, buttery shade of tomato soup. Together woman and machine are in total golden glow mode. And how about that grassy green grass catcher?!...
