SOAP BOXES, TYPEWRITERS, & STRAWBERRY BEER THIS WEEKEND

Red Bull Soapbox Derby L.A.There will be big crowds on hand for the Red Bull Soap Box Races downtown this Saturday. This free action packed wacky race event premiered in L.A. in 2009. The second edition promises to be even bigger. Click on the photo at the right to view our video from 2009.

Strawberry fields

Another really big event this weekend is the annual Strawberry Festival in Oxnard. Expect to find everything strawberry, and I do mean everything, beer, popcorn. and even pizza. Make your own strawberry shortcake - the best is always the proven old standby. If you plan to take some berries home with you, better get them early in the day, they usually sell out and they are prime berries from the fields nearby. Of course the festival will have plenty of entertainment, arts, crafts and fun for the kids. Eye Spy LA has been of course.  View our video from last year's event - click the photo above.

If you'd like to do something a bit unusual and no doubt alot less crowded, and you happen to collect or harbor an intense affection for the typewriter, head to the Los Angeles Type-In in Glendale on Saturday. Buy, sell, collect, and typing contests. Fortunately the event is at a tavern and pleny of beer will be available.

There are more editor's picks this week, in fact, too many to mention. Find them all here with the details.

PLAN AHEAD:Take a peek at what's coming in JUNE. As of this morning there were still some tickets remaining for this year's Last Remaining Seats screenings in June.  Get them while you can.

LA CASITA OPENED MY EYES... by Abby Abanes

LA CASITA

For those of us living in Los Angeles, Mexican food is as much a part of our culture as Disneyland and the Dodgers. Regardless of what part of town you're in, you're bound to see one, two or more Mexican restaurants in your neighborhood, from fast food joints like Taco Bell and chain restaurants like El Torito to small hole in the wall taquerias and casual family-run restaurants.

I have tended to overlook Mexican food. I always felt like there wasn't enough variety. La Casita opened my eyes to new and different tasty possibilities that I never experienced before and all because of the soulful cooking of Chef-Owners, Jaime Martin del Campo and Ramiro Arvizu...

"NO WORD IN GUYANESE FOR ME" SPEAKS VOLUMES AT THE SIDEWALK STUDIO THEATRE by M.R. Hunter

NO WORD

How do you tell someone who you are when there's no word to describe what you are? Wendy Graf thoughtfully explores this cultural quandary in her newest play starring the supremely versatile Anna Khaja in a one-woman show that goes behind the hijab in a journey of the heart.

Ultimately, Graf's powerful play is about faith. Faith in one's self, faith in forgiveness and keeping the faith when it refuses to keep you, and when all else fails, "No Word in Guyanese for Me" speaks volumes for those who have no voice...

THE MILK FARM, DIXON, CALIFORNIA, 1960

by Charles Phoenix

Everybody loves it when a cow jumps over the moon. But we love it even more when it's a neon cow jumping over a neon moon perched high-in-the-sky on an erector set platform on the roof of a ranch-style roadside restaurant. Looks like she might even be a tail wagger! I'm sure the '59 Chrysler, '55 Mercury, '57 Chevy and Ford pickup are enjoying the view from the front row...

DANCE REVIEW

"RE-MOUNTING; LUCINDA CHILDS, MARK MORRIS AND PAT GRANEY SHAKE THE DUST OFF OLD WORKS  by Kelly Hargraves

April and May brought a sort of "Greatest Hits" approach to LA dance programming, with all three main dance venues presenting works that are decades old. Lucinda Childs graced UCLA LIVE's Royce Hall; Mark Morris Dance Group promenaded across the Music Centre's Dorothy Chandler stage, and Pat Graney mostly stood still on REDCAT's stage...

FOUR CLOWNS

"FOUR CLOWNS" KEEPS CLOWNING AROUND @ SACRED FOOLS by M.R. Hunter

It's in your face comedy-like having a clown's boutonnire squirt water in your face. This strangely dark and disturbing journey through the uglier aspects of humanity contrasts against the lighthearted antics of four clowns inevitably becoming human through a trial by fire.

If you're looking for an offbeat, wickedly funny and extremely adult oriented brand of comedy then this is definitely up your alley...
