"THE BIRTHDAY BOYS" BLINDSIDES AT THE NOHO STAGES By M.R. Hunter

Darkness. Fear. Certain death. Sounds hilarious, right? In Aaron Kozak's "The Birthday Boys," three captive marines struggle to keep their wits about them inside an undisclosed storeroom, blindfolded and bound with duct tape. The humor is two-fold both in the physical contortions as the men attempt to flee and free themselves from their bonds and the camaraderie that evolves as their execution looms.
The action is relentless from the moment the door opens to the final twist that gives this comedy a FUBAR flavor - the real enemy is not who you might think...

27 DIM SUM DISHES AT LUNASIA AKA I GUESS WE WERE REALLY HUNGRY! By Abby Abanes

When it comes to dim sum, I count myself pretty lucky that I live in San Gabriel Valley. Whenever I'm in the mood for shau mai and dumplings, the question is not where to find a good dim sum restaurant, but which one to choose. Whether it's cart, menu-driven or both, you're bound to find dim sum restaurants that will make for a very deliciously happy morning. For this particular post, it's all about Lunasia where my group tried 27 different dishes. I've actually just amazed myself seeing the number of dishes typed in front of me. 27 different dishes? After recounting, it still stayed at 27 dishes. I guess we were just very hungry that morning....

ROGUE MACHINE'S "WISH I HAD A SYLVIA PLATH" - AN ABSOLUTE GAS! By M.R. Hunter

Something's cooking over at the Lounge Theatre and it smells a lot like a well-done Sylvia Plath. Add an absurd combination of a talking oven, an adulterous husband, a couple of demanding kids, and a hallucinogenic cooking show to a clever but risky premise in the last moments leading up to Sylvia Plath's suicide and you're left with a sizzling, embittered poet on a hotplate...

TWO DANCE STORMS BLOW INTO TOWN by Kelly Hargraves
Stephen Petronio is almost a classic. His company has been around a quarter of a century. Clean lines, lean bodies, geometry...you know the style. His recent show "I Drink the Air Before Me" is a movement adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest - a timid tempest at UCLA Live!
Another Tempest is coming up as REDCAT takes over the Million Dollar Theatre to present New Zealand choreographer Lemi Ponifasio/MAU's Tempest Without A Body April 2 & 3...

A WINNING WARLOCK - MAGIC AT THE BEVERLY WILSHIRE HOTEL by Mark Share
The magician Ivan Amodei performs close-up tricks with cards and small props (these include pins, candy mints, and scrabble tiles) for an intimate and participatory audience of about thirty in a posh room accompanied by a cellist in a red evening gown. No incantations here -- just stuff that he rightly says will "freak you out!" You leave and try to deduce with your fellow guests, ranging from enchanted couples to delighted kids, how he did this and that and admire the pace of his patter... FULL REVIEW |
