FAIR WEATHER THIS WEEKEND - YAY!
Wine lovers can head to Santa Monica for Pinot Noir Days on Saturday. Also on Saturday, Harry Potter fans will be going to the Getty for a Wizard School Scavenger Hunt. You can wear a costume (or not) and head down to the beach to watch the 13.1 Marathon in Venice as "the party hits the pavement" and gets going at 7:13 in the morning on Sunday. Should be great weather for an early morning frolic.
For some this is a 3 day weekend. MONDAY (Jan. 17th) is Martin Luther King Day: The Autry Center will be open. Kids with a day off from school might enjoy gold panning or a scavenger hunt with prizes and other special programs that day.
LEARN SOMETHING NEW IN THE NEW YEAR - you'll find everything from rose pruning to astrology classes offered on the Eye Spy LA Classes/workshops calendar.
There's more of course ...

THE STATE OF THE STAGE IN LA & THE TOP 10 IN 2010 By M.R. Hunter
This last year was a bit of an experiment and a personal holdout for me to strive towards reviewing shows and theatre companies that sometimes slip between the cracks and spine of our Playbills and Footlights programs. I didn't see them all, but of those I did see here are my personal top ten in 2010.
And the top ten of 2010 were... |

ROWDY & MERRY - HAIR @ THE PANTAGES THEATRE IN HOLLYWOOD
By Ali Tobia
There is something to be said for raw youth energy. It is infectious, happy, and inexplicably wonderful. Youth energy is never boring; it has a quality that is exactly anti-mundane. Youth is characterized by hormone fueled biology, a developing brain that can't wait for new stimuli, and an energy that is uncrushed and purely alive.
The new production of HAIR at the Pantages Theater from now until January 23rd is a world bursting with the fluorescence of youth.

THE A.W.A.R.D. SHOW! AT REDCAT? by Kelly Hargraves
I remember long ago when I told a friend that the arts would never be very popular until they got competitive. Well, if only I had told someone in television! After years of American Idol and SYTYCD, the legit, arts world has decided that it's time to join the fray and let the audience decide who "wins."

PURPLE PEOPLE PORTRAIT, SOMEWHERE, USA, 1965 By Charles Phoenix
Fancifully framed life-size scale professional portraits of Junior and Missy totally upstage a mid-century grandma, grandpa and grandbaby posing in their Early American living room. Who knew photos could be so photogenic? It's not often you see pictures in pictures and never have I seen them scale-matched like this for maximum effect...
