THIS WEEK IN L.A. SEA THE LIGHTS

Downtown on Ice

Make way for the new electronica you may rake in this season and take your old stuff (aka e-waste) to Topanga Mall in the west San Fernando Valley this Saturday - proceeds benefit Tree People. Take your family  and pets to Manhattan Beach for the Good Energy Festival where you'll find products and services that make a positive difference.

MOST INTRIGUING activity this weekend: The Do Good Bus is going somewhere on Sunday.

SEA THE LIGHTS: Local marinas and waterfront communities decorate for the holidays and are a good place to stroll around viewing holiday lights throughout the season. You can also take a Hydrobike Tour of the lights in the Naples area of Long Beach this season for a different experience. Holiday Boat Parades coming up: Dana Point (Dec. 10-11 & 17-18), Newport Harbor (Dec. 15-19th), King Harbor in Redondo Beach (Saturday Dec. 11th) and Marina del Rey (Dec. 11). You'll find these and other holiday events on the Holiday page.

There's more of course ...

EYE SPY LA ON ICE

By M.R. Hunter

Pershing Square Ice SkatingWhen you think of downtown Los Angeles, ice skating isn't exactly what comes to mind, but the rink at Pershing Square in Downtown L.A. is about the closest thing we have to Rockefeller Center and while it may not be as grand, the thrill of gliding past the surrounding skyscrapers is much the same.

The rink is so inviting, that even the most novice skater will be tempted to stagger out (as I did), clutch the boards (check) and find a sympathetic stranger to cling to (I have no shame)...

TWO AMERICAN CLASSICS, TWO DIFFERENT RESULTS

by Kelly Hargraves

This week saw the opening of two American theater classics. One was transformed into an exhilarating deconstruction by The Wooster Group and one was done the old fashioned way without as much vibrancy.

Wooster GroupTENNESSEE WILLIAMS' VIEUX CARRE IS THE LATEST FROM THE INNOVATIVE WOOSTER GROUP @ REDCAT
Tennessee Williams career was built on characters drenched in southern pathos in works such as The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, amongst others. When Williams was a young man, just setting out on his own during the depression, he lived in a boarding house in old New Orleans. It is here that he seems to have first encountered such colorful characters and recalls them in one of his later works, Vieux Carré...  READ MORE

West Side StoryWEST SIDE STORY @ THE PANTAGES THEATRE
The national tour of the Broadway revival of West Side Story, the play some call the best American musical of all time, hit Los Angeles. It certainly is American, then and now.

Although based on the classic love story from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, two star crossed lovers kept apart by prejudice, set in the spectrum of coming to America, adds the issue of race, not class, to the quagmire. With the Puerto Rican Maria falling for the American Tony in a neighborhood culture set apart by gangs-the Sharks and the Jets. This production, uses both English and Spanish dialogue to make that distinction even more clear. In light of the recent immigration battles, the division seems as relevant today, if not more-so... READ MORE

CLOWNING AROUND AT EL PUEBLO

El PuebloEl Pueblo Historic Park and Olvera Street, across from Union Station in Downtown L.A., is a colorful destination anytime and there is almost always something going on there. Last Sunday the color quotient was quadrupled as a troop of crazily costumed clowns came into town to entertain the crowd in La Plaza....

WIENERMOBILE ON PARADE, UPSTATE NEW YORK, 1956 By Charles Phoenix

Garland swags across the street that's lined with locals. It's Christmas time city. I don't see any Christmas lights, but who needs them when you've got FOOD FAIR beautifully blazing in four rows of orange neon. Leg of lamb and liverwurst are advertised in the store window. But who wants lamb and liver when the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is going by?!
