THIS WEEK IN L.A. HAPPY HANUKKAH! Lights, action, shop - 'tis the season...

Pershing Square Menorah

FESTIVAL OF LIGHT: Hanukkah began on December 1st this year. The Skirball Center will host a Down Home Hanukkah Festival celebrating American folk art and music traditions this Sunday. Eye Spy LA went to the Menorah lighting at Pershing Square (Video link). They will continue to light the candles through the holiday. Menorahs were also lit at City Hall and Universal City this week. Next Wednesay (Dec. 8) LA Live will light up a 50 foot Menorah in Nokia Plaza.

HOLIDAY LIGHT SIGHTS: The County of Los Angeles lit its tree on the Music Center Plaza Monday and most of the usual places to spot lights are all well lit by now for your viewing pleasure. SPECIAL NOTE: DWP will NOT have their annual display this year in Griffith Park. Apparently they're taking a holiday this year due to construction.

A SEA OF LIGHTS: Local marinas and waterfront communities decorate for the holidays. Ride a Hydrobike and tour the lights in the Naples area of Long Beach. Dana Point, Newport Harbor, Redondo Beach and Marina del Rey have holiday boat parades this month. You'll find these and other holiday events on the Holiday page.

ACTION:
Downtown On Ice is now open in Pershing Square. Take the Metro Red Line to the Pershing Square Station. Along with ice skating in one of the most picturesque settings in the L.A. area, look forward to concerts and other special events throughout the rest of the year. The L.A. Kings Holiday Ice is also open now at LA Live. Race around, solve puzzles, pick up clues, there are three scavenger hunts this weekend to get you moving around town. Find these and more on the Recreation and Tour pages.

SHOP: Every year Eye Spy LA highlights the best places to find unique, unusual and handmade gifts. Check the Eye Spy LA Shopping page for special shopping events. Also consider going to one of the many L.A. museums this season. They often have an interesting array of items for sale in their museum shops not easily found elsewhere.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION: I'll be showing some of my favorite photos of Los Angeles at the 5th Annual Peach Tree Pottery Holiday Art Show Saturday & Sunday noon to 5pm in Mar Vista. You'll also find a great array of handmade gifts by local artists and artisans at very reasonable prices there. Come by and say hi!

There's more of course ...

SEEING STARS AT THE GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY

Griffith Park ObservatoryYou might spot a few stars at The Ivy, but the best place to go in Los Angeles for some serious star sightings is the world-renowned Griffith Observatory. Considered the crown jewel of Griffith Park, this iconic landmark perched in the verdant hills near the famous Hollywood sign lords over the city with its telescopic view of the Basin, Downtown, Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean...

SEARS FOR CHRISTMAS, FRESNO, CA, 1956 By Charles Phoenix

One Santa, two palms, three Christmas trees, eight reindeer and parking lot full of cars. Merry Christmas! There's certainly no mistaking which parking lot you're in. This pillar of American civilization wears its brand name like a title on a giant movie screen. I hope the name of that oh-so stylish "handwritten" SEARS font is Optimistic. If it isn't, it certainly should be...
