THIS WEEK IN L.A. Fine Food & Living History

King Gillette Ranch

This weekend look forward to a Tamale Throwdown, wining and dining on a Do Good Bus, no handcuffs required for the New LAPD Headquarters Architectural Talk and Tour downtown, and much more.

GET OUTTA TOWN FREE: If you live downtown, you might like to pack a picnic and take the free Transit to Trails ride from Vista Hermosa Park to King Gillette Ranch this Saturday. King Gillette Ranch is a beautiful park, pictured here, in the center of the Santa Monica Mountains.

GO BACK IN TIME: Re-enactments are a great way to "live history". Head to Moorpark for the 10th Annual Blue and the Gray Civil War Reenactment this weekend to get a first hand look into the Civil War era. Witness great battles, stroll through military encampments, and learn about the music, crafts and dancing back in the day. Large food court for refreshments and entertainment. I went to this event last year and really enjoyed it.

GAMBLING, FAST CARS, FINE FOOD & WINE - raise funds and help out arts and charitable organizations this weekend. On Friday poker playin' people will raise funds for the Theatre of Note at their Annual Texas Hold "Em Tournament in Hollywood. Saturday drive a Lamborghini then have some caviar and a cocktail while you spin the roulette wheel at the 5th Annual Vegas in the Valley to raise funds for K9 cancer. Enjoy art and chili and take home a hand made piece of pottery to raise funds for AMOCA's educational programs in Pomona at their annual Chili Bowl Fundraiser.

PLAN AHEAD: not everything fun and interesting to do happens on the weekend. Next Tuesday So You Think You Can Dance will be live at Staples, the Bakin' With the Boss Tour will be at the Orpheum on Wednesday. A Raisin in the Sun will be recorded for radio at the Skirball Center Wednesday through Sunday next week.

There's more of course ...

Bloody Red HeartTEENS TELL ALL IN "BLOODY RED HEART" @ THE ODYSSEY by M.R. Hunter

Few shows speak so directly to the myriad problems facing the modern teenager, let alone the particular issues that girls face in these formative years. Even fewer shows offer the opportunity for an all-female cast, but "Bloody Red Heart" successfully does both-raising awareness through the riveting and emotional real stories written by teen girls...

Autumn GardensTWO DREAM TEAM CASTS IN "THE AUTUMN GARDEN" - IMMENSELY SATISFYING @ DEAF WEST THEATRE

by M.R. Hunter

In a city obsessed with youth, where growing old gracefully is more a vice than a virtue, The Antaeus Company's double-cast revival of Lillian Hellman's frank, Chekhovian masterpiece concerning the immutability of middle-age is a sensational tour de force championed by both veteran casts.

Considered by Ms. Hellman as her "most satisfying play," these productions are just that, immensely satisfying-one feels a sort of languor afterwards, much like the languid desperation of Hellman's characters fending off the autumn of their days...

 Charles Phoenix
KIMBERLY CREST HOUSE, REDLANDS, CA, 2010 By Charles Phoenix

Recently, I hopped in the 'ol car and went for a Sunday drive. After about an hour of driving east of LA, I found myself in the fine city of Redlands. Several signs pointed to a "historic landmark," the Kimberly Crest Mansion and Gardens. I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I love old homes and gardens, and I've toured my fair share. But standing before this oh-so stately French chateau-ish Victorian mansion built in 1897 was hypnotizing.
